My claim is that, for the left, this is not a side effect of political debate but their primary strategy. I mean, everyone can see you doing it right now. I repeat this same point frequently because I know that you guys will refuse to ever consider it seriously, but the stereotypes of the political extremes are well on their way to being flipped. The left is no longer the bastion of intelligence and common sense (not that it ever was, but it did successfully get public perception to that point) and the right is no longer the party of ignorance and faith-based knee jerk responses to world events. Increasingly, it's the right who will have in-depth debates using an array of facts and figures and it's the left who will refuse to interact with anyone who doesn't share their political religion, preferring instead to hurl abuse and insults.

In the battle for the votes of moderates, this is a massive win for the right. I mean, come on. The left has lost the presidency and all of congress.
