Political participation by people who are nearly completely alienated from society is often a way of trying to connect with it in a maladaptive way. Often this includes hating on society for being degenerate (which it is, but the only reason most of these people don't participate is because they were rejected, not out of real choice.) It reminds me of that scene in taxi driver where the guy practices confronting someone on the street in front of a mirror. Anything, even an altercation, beats being ignored because in caveman times, being ignored meant being abandoned and left to fend for yourself. At least a confrontation might result in an increase in social status.

Also, obsession with politics is a form of escapism. Being angry takes your mind off your problems and even though it feels bad outrage has an addictive quality that depression mostly lacks.
