It won't matter anymore. One of my sources of anxiety was shame over never dating. SSRIs have helped my debilitating anxiety over other things and killed my sex drive so now I can focus 100% on work again and not care about being a permavirgin. 10/10 would recommend.

Thats not how psychiatry works.

If you go up to a psychiatrist and say "I'm terrible at everything, and want to learn to become more competent" then rather than teach you more skills so that you can be more competent, they'll teach you that you're not incompetent and give you pills to boost your self-esteem.

Basically, they reject the concept that people actually can be worthless. The only way they give you pills to improve your ability to do something is to help you focus or to make you less shy. That's about it.

This is what I have seen from my experiences in psychiatry. 3/10 would recommend again.

Nope. I still get sad about it but it's more abstract and less intense and I can usually ignore it. I have a job that takes up 90% of my time and have a few really good friendships with mostly women that take up the rest, so I consider pills turning me non-sexual to be a feature rather than a bug.

For me, taking 200 mg of Zoloft a day numbed me emotionally, made me feel dizzy all the time, and also made me really liberal. Like, before I was taking the pills I thought Trump would be a good choice for president, but after taking them I was pretty passive about politics and thought Clinton would be a better choice for president.

Also, if you take antidepressants with alcohol they'll fuck your shit up, which was probably the main reason I stopped taking them desu. The other reason being that they make it harder for you to feel happiness on your own without the pills later on.

I won't lie though, I am considering starting to take them again in the winter of this year.

It's only been 6 weeks but so far the answer for me is yes. I'm not happy and I don't think I ever will be but it doesn't hurt as much anymore. I can hear my friends tell stories about hooking up with guys or listen to their relationship problems and it doesn't make me feel shitty about myself anymore which is nice because I was kind of a bad friend and avoided those topics for awhile.

I was on SSRIs as a result of depression largely caused by tfwnogf.

I started off on 50mg of Sertraline. I got horrible side-effects. I literally got 90% of all the possible side-effects, plus several others that were not listed. However, for the first week of taking them I felt less depressed. After that first week, I felt depressed again, so I went up to 100mg. A week later, and I felt depressed again. Every week I was increasing the dosage. Eventually I was taking 300mg a day (150% the maximum dose). When I started feeling depressed even then, I went back to the doc, and he put me on Citalopram (another SSRI). Same deal. Same side-effects, and I had to keep increasing the dose.

SSRIs are a bit of a meme. They work by preventing neurons from "absorbing" serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter. The synapses that require serotonin stimulate the release of emotional hormones such as dopamine and a few others. The problem is that serotonin needs to be kept incredibly well-regulated, or else you could die. The reason I got such horrible side-effects was because my brain was basically overdosing on serotonin. If serotonin gets to a dangerous level, your brain simply absorbs it faster, negating the effect.

So basically, assuming your serotonin cycle is already healthy, then taking SSRIs will cause horrible side-effects, and a short-term benefit. But eventually your brain will adjust to the medication.

If your serotonin cycle is NOT healthy, then SSRIs should work quite well.

How old are you, OP? If you're under the age of 20, why don't you try getting a gf? It's not too late for people below the age of 20.

I'm depressed largely because I'm a sad lonely loser who has never had a girlfriend. I would say I'm suicidal. When I drink I don't think "WOW LIFE IS GREAT HA HA HA xD". I think "gee, now that I'm drunk I really feel as though I could kill myself".

A lot of the anguish I feel is because I am stuck in an unhappy position in my life, and I have no viable way out of it. That is what hurts more than anything else.

Drinking comforts me not because it changes how I feel -- I'm still just as depressed when I am drunk. But it liberates me because I know that I have a solution to my problem; suicide.

It's hard to explain. Think of it this way: I want my suffering to end. I could kill myself. But I want to live and be happy.

That is the problem I have. And that's what causes distress. But when I drink, I lose a lot of inhibition, and suddenly I feel more confident that suicide is the right choice. And because I'm no longer emotionally conflicted about suicide, I feel relieved.

So drinking doesn't make me "feel better" per se. It just reassures me that suicide is always an option.
