I think one factor that contributes to the lack of women in the metal scene is that most women seem to want to be liked (so much to the point where they don't want to engage in anything that is widely disliked and something that people will make assumptions about you for).
Metal is a pretty widely disliked genre. People either hate it, or love it to death.
I've been listening to metal since I was a little kid and one thing that makes me love it so much as that I cannot find the amount of passion that is put into metal anywhere else in music. Listening to it makes me FEEL. Whether it be feeling powerful and unstoppable, or determined and focused. I don't think women really feel these desires.
