Well I'm poor and grew up in a single parent household. I thought that would help but guess not because I'm white. Straight A's, all AP classes Senior year, and some extracurriculars. My cousin who is also white got rejected from every Ivy including Cornell and his SATs were even higher than mine.

I got into the two top state schools in NY (Binghamton and Stoney Brook). I ended up choosing the only private university that accepted me (~30% acceptance rate). It ranks somewhere in the 30s on the USNews college rankings so I can't say I'm that upset.

Buoyancy comes from being less dense than water. You accomplish this by taking large amounts of air into your lungs and holding it in. Take in a deep breath and hold it, and you will be able to float.

In terms of learning how to swim, wade around in the shallows. It's hard to drown in 4 feet of water. Practice stroking your arms and moving through the water without touching the ground, but if you ever feel out of control you can just place your feet on the ground and stand for a minute. When you can stay afloat without touching the ground for at least a few minutes then you're ready to move into deeper water. When the water is deeper and you have more freedom of movement, practice advanced techniques like diving downward, underwater somersaults, handstands, and floating on your back. DO NOT GO INTO WATER MORE THAN 7-8 FEET DEEP UNTIL YOU ARE CONFIDENT THAT YOU CAN STAY AFLOAT AND MOVE YOUR BODY IN THE DIRECTION YOU WANT. Now you can swim.
