I miss playing so much. I am 26 now, started when was 11. Stopped around 22, just too much other shit and had to sell my third guitar to pay bills. This was my second guitar (first was a standard learner fender), that I sold to buy my first car (87 porsche 944 S2). Also played drums for 6 years, miss that a lot. Is it easy to get back into? Does a lot of muscle memory remain or would I have to start completely over again, even build calises back up? I still have my raven half stack at my parents house so I'd just have to get a new guitar.

I have a Gibson Melody maker from the 1980's. It was my grandfather's who died before I was born. Many members of my family believe I was reincarnated as him because we are the only two members of our family with any kind of musical talent.

I used it in a musical theatre show that took place in the 80's and my dad cried.

Don't play it much though, there's something fucked up with the G string. I mostly play acoustic covers of songs I enjoy.

It's the worst, isn't it? Also, if you're looking for brands that make decent lefties, check out Eastwood. Their necks feel really flat and are kinda thin, but the build quality is pretty good.

If you're in UK there's a brand called Revelation guitars that's pretty good. Also rondomusic, but you're gonna want to upgrade the hardware/electronics in those. The bodies and necks are good, though.

I've been playing guitar on and off for a couple of years. I started playing shit metal in dropped D (Rammstein mostly, all shitty power chords). I had my guitar abandoned for almost a year. Recently I started listening to more "strummy" music like Radiohead (well, at least some of their earlier stuff) so I decided to learn at least the open chords. I've been practicing regularly and now I can more or less decently play "No surprises", "Exit music for a film" and "Fake plastic trees". I also started to sing along while playing the guitar, which for me is kinda difficult because I'm an autist and I dread my neighbors will hear me and laugh at me thinking I totally suck (which I most probably do).

>It interferes with time, and if he focuses too much on it he will be slower to learn what he should be knowing

The same could be said for arguing with strangers on the Internet.

>Learning single note vibrato, when you don't know how to improvise or play a scale is like buying furniture when you haven't even seen or looked at the dimensions of your new house.

How? I really don't see the similarity.

>My expertise on music far outweighs your own.

How would you know? I've been playing guitar for about 14 years.

i'd say drums, but most people usually have most fun learning guitar. i wouldn't recommend doing piano because that takes considerably more effort to get decent at, depending on what kind of music you want to play.
drums is the easiest and doesn't take as long to not sound shit at.
guitar is the most fun after you get past the initial learning curve.
for piano, there's more effort that goes into learning it, so i'd suggest waiting until after you learn the others, since drums didn't take me more than two months of practicing every day for atleast an hour, to be able to not sound like shit.
guitar has taken me about 3 months of practicing like that too, and im not embarassed to play in front of family anymore.

I always wanted that guitar, but in my country that guitar is so fucking expensive

This. I'm left handed but I learned right handed, just like kiko loureiro

A lot easier than you think
>callus
No, these WILL be gone. Even after 6 months they disappeared. It's a weird feel to have the technical chops still, but being physically in pain playing as my callus comes back.

Wow. Six whole years

i think six years is a pretty long time to stick with an instrument

Yea I got mine a while ago, I leaned the intro to Like Real People Do, but I can't find a good video for the rest
I jumped to Falling Slowly, which is really easy and nice to hear

Been playing for almost 10 years. Suck at making own music so that has made me a bit depressed. Mostly play with my Carvin.

I've played for 7 years and I don't know a single chord by name. Theory is a meme.

>theory
And that's like saying 'I've been riding motorcycle for 7 years but never learned to ride a bike'.

I was thinking about getting a guitar for a quite a few months now. But what I dont know is how do you actually learn by yourself. Do you just watch instruction videos and read about music theory?
>>
>>38695380
There's like a billion videos for beginner guitarists. Or you can just start searching tabs for songs that you like and start learning those things. I started like this. Learn some simple chords and start working on that. Get comfortable with the instrument.

first song I learned. only 2 chords and quite simple strumming pattern.

I had to improvise jazz music at school performances.
so I was in a school band, and a band outside of school.

Above average skill for a musician to have

Pic isn't mine, but it's the model. I have Seymour Duncan pups (full shred in the bridge, honestly can't remember the neck. JB-somethings?), and Sperzel locking tuners just because

12 years here, all I have to show for it is one shitty song I made from like 8 years ago kek.

You lucky ass nigga. Stock hardware? It looks nice, regardless

>>38695053

I want to touch on this and why it's a bad perspective because I've been thinking about it lately. Learning music theory and notation is directly analogous to learning to read and write. It literally changes the way you think about and approach music/language. I've been studying it more than ever lately (because I was like you, went years and years without really knowing much), and it's changed a lot both in how I listen to music and how I play. For sure, some people can get by without knowing it, but the vast majority of composers/players understood theory. "The limits of my language means the limits of my world"

I've been wanting to get a Fender Tele but finding one that's natural color with a maple neck in my local stores is rare.

For now I play my Epi LP.
>>
>>38695535
Nice Schecter. I was in search of a Schecter Hellraiser 7-string but couldn't find one anywhere near me so decided to get the Carvin. Yea I have stock hardware because I don't really have knowledge of that many setups to start modifying it. Plus I'd probably have to carve the body to get any other mics fit in there. Mine looks exactly like the pic but chrome pegs.
>>
does anyone play any smaller brands? stuff like reverend, puresalem, bacchaus, or something? they all seem cool and i've been wanting to get away from fender, but i'm not sure what to get
>>
>>38695539
>natural w/ a maple neck
muh
i want that in a les paul though
>>
>spend $2500 on a LP
>enjoy playing a used busted $30 squier strat that i put humbuckers in more than the LP
>>
Fuck me, music theory is a huge dick in my ears to learn.
>>
>>38695869
you need to try out an instrument and see how it plays before you buy it.
Not all 2500 dollar instruments play that well. it's sad.
>>
>>38695880
Theory is primarily useful for talking about music after it has been written or for writing formulaic music that everyone and their mother has heard a thousand times before. Just imagine what you want to hear in your head and then make that a reality.

>>
>>38695712

You probably made a better choice, I played a hellraiser once and it felt...not good. Bulky, cheap. The C-1+ has been good to me though.

Fair enough. It's not too difficult to get into though, if you ever wanted to. Pickups are the hardest, but even then when you find one there's usually another that's typically paired with it. Wouldn't wanna carve the body though, that just sounds like a pain in the ass and might fuck up the tone

>>38695869

I could never justify spending more than $1k on a guitar, honestly. Mostly for that reason.

>>38695961

Well, kind of, but kind of not. You're unlikely to subvert the order of things or make something truly new without a familiar knowledge of what came before. Just imagining and playing what's in your head will more than likely lead to derivative stuff; after all, you're likely still working within the typical tonal framework that's been around for hundreds of years. although I'm not thinking solely of rock based music, so
>>
>>38695535
>"The limits of my language means the limits of my world"
I still compose and improvise just fine, but I do it alone. In the end theory is just a way so you can be on the same page with other people and communicate adequately, it's not necessary if you want to play on your own.
>>
>>38696093
>without a familiar knowledge of what came before.
>>38696083
Ok, I might be taking my knowledge of music theory for granted -- I studied classical piano for ten years and have been playing for twentytwo. I guess it's just that theory won't write the music for you but it gives you shortcuts to block things together to be able to 'paint' more at once and with less effort.
