This, OP. It all kind of clicked when I went to Japan from the US. I suddenly remembered all the foreign restaurants and stores where all the workers and most of the patrons were one nationality. It's like an oasis when you find a group of people with your ethnic background in a foreign country.

I stopped going home. I'd go out with my friends in the evenings or if I did go home I'd bring a friend or my fwb. And I'd make plans for the weekends so I wouldn't stay home. Even if nobody hung out with me I'd just go out and look at the city I always dreamed of and remind myself how lucky I was to be here.
