I don't actually know about manually untwisting, but what I do know is that if the balls are not jingle-janglin' around and are kept in place, they will eventually untie themselves.
This is going to sound retarded but it's like this; you know how bread loaves are tied off via twisting? If it is left dangling without the twist tie and no external forces are applied, what happens? It untwists itself. If it's bouncing around, it'll twist sometimes.
