Yes, it's very much the better read. The core point of how Jeffrey slipped through the cracks is interesting, considering how he was pretty fucked from the beginning if the author can be believed. Even without that, it's still an interesting read that i'm sure a lot of us can relate to. We all probably had that one kid around who was always really off.

I was mostly kidding about the conspiracy theory shit. With that said though, there does seem to be a focus in modern film and television on the losers of the world. There aren't many super-popular films about heroes, conquerers, or whatever. And even if there are, the characters are still quirky losers. Think about Harry Potter and shit like that. The "flawed heroes" of older stories didn't have girlfriend problems and weren't socially awkward.
