Try a variety of genres from top-rated lists. Don't be afraid to try out "overrated" things like Naruto. You're allowed to enjoy shit like that. Getting into anime is about finding out what your taste is so it's worth trying things you probably expect to dislike, as well as not listening to what other people tell you to watch.

Do not start with full series at first, unless you have quite some time.
Try Jin Roh, Armitage3, Akira or GitS for some movie-sized bites.

Next, load up Serial Expiemernts Lain. Watch each episode back to back.
Immediately switch to Neon Genesis Evangelion, but watch only episodes 1 to 24. Stop, then watch the feature film End of Evangelion. Then return to NGE, watch 25 and 26. Skip death&rebirth, and 1.11/2.22/3.33 they're shit
Now you should be sufficiently confused, so watch Welcome to the NHK.
Then watch Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.
