If he lives in a small-medium sized Midwestern city then that's a good starting salary. Not everyone lives in some horrid dump like San Francisco or NYC. And considering OP doesn't know what he's doing, that's good pay.

I guarantee you're miles better than Pajeet.
Just stick it out and browse /g/ programming threads and do your own projects.
It took me like 1.5 years at my job the hang of it. They didn't really care because I was just working on some phone app barely anyone used.
Also, $50k is a pretty low salary for developers.
I live in a mid sized and the lowest offer I got was $55k, and the one I took was $65k. Almost everyone I work with makes 6 figures.
