The only thing I think is stupid about it is that trans people expect me to actually think of them as the sex they switched to. I will always look at them as the sex they were born as.

Changing your clothes, hair style, hormones and exercise regimen doesn't change what sex you are. MTF can never get pregnant, and FTM can never impregnate, so I will never truly see them as members of those sexes. Rather, I see trans as their own unique sex that is neither male or female.

It's mostly a meme, yes. Many people are overly concerned with their own perceived social status and will go along with whatever they think their peers will praise them for.
