Those terrible things happened yet life goes on, people rebuild and try to go back to their normal lives. Besides WW1 and WW2 didn't just happen out of nowhere, they had years of build up with tensions much worse than they have been currently. We also somewhat learned and have gotten better at not killing each other. By that I mean the major powers have decided that directly attacking each other isn't worth it.
