My boss is a slightly nerdy dude who started university in 1996. The kind of guy used to play Doom or some shit by stringing LAN cables between dorm rooms (chads used to cut them from time to time) and went to join computer clubs, comic clubs and even Japanese animation clubs. He made a few close friends from them and even managed to meet his future wife. But the guy pretty much admits that he would be a shut-in today with the modern internet, the only reason he went out to these things was to avoid crushing loneliness, even if social situations made him nervous. Over time he just got better social skills and is now moderately successful.
