Maybe you can, but not everyone can think for themselves or have the initiative to figure things out. So the formal education is more of a filter than anything.

>Get job in field
>Could honestly do the job without any formal education whatsoever.
>All of my co-workers have a Master's degree and layoffs occur pretty regularly
>Put myself through a Master's through evening classes so I don't lose a job that doesn't really even require a Bachelor's

>want career lab tech job
>want 6+ years experience and bachelors or masters
>trained what to do on the job
>tfw you need a degree just to show someone you're not retarded
You're really just paying for the opportunity to earn the grades for a degree. Any knowledge you may pick up on the way is incidental. This is very important to keep in mind.

Which job is it OP?
>Go to school to better my knowledge, skills, everything
>Major in Art and take classes in as many other things as possible
>Absolutely zero expectations of a career in Art, just doing it for myself
>Find decent job in Art first two months into college
>Quit job right before I graduate because I need to be serious about paying my loans
>Get entry-level job at Amazon warehouse making double the pay, full benefits, free stocks, and they kiss your ass to keep morale up
>Actually moving up in the company because I'm a smart communicator, work hard, and don't complain like a bitch when things don't go my way
Still annoyed that I have to prove myself to move up because I got an art degree and not a business or sports science degree like the zero-experience 22 year olds they hire as managers.

well what the fuck kind of useful thing do you expect to do with an art degree
