I'm surprised someone else knows, but yeah, it would be difficult to choose among the fairy tales, since they are numerous and I've only listened to a few of them, once or twice.
I've heard the Piano Quintet is considered his magnum opus, and I enjoyed it a lot, so I'll go with that.
>>
I like to listen to classical music. There's so much quality stuff on youtube, a lot of FLAC stuff too. Youtube's bitrate is high enough these days. Anything uploaded in FLAC will sound the same as the original FLAC.

I will give his piano quintet a listen tonight though.

What do you play, anon?

Just finished listening to Op. 20, by the way. Good recommendation.
>>

Holy fuck, this is the first good classical piece of music I've heard composed by a woman.
>>
>>38378369
What do I play? Like what is my repertoire?
I'm between pieces at the moment but I'm working on Scriabin's Etude Op 42 No 5 and Szymanowski's Variations in b flat minor.
I warm up with some of Faure's Op 84 and Chopin's Nocturnes, Waltzes, and Mazurkas.
I really want to hurry up and finish Variations in b flat minor so I can spend my time learning Variations on a Polish Theme. That pieces still makes the hair on my arms stand up whenever I listen to it.

Very good taste. I've never seen anyone who's heard the first two as well.
>>
>>38378457

Fuck, that all sounds very advanced and impressive. Not very familiar with the Russian romantics(with the exception of medtner), although I've been wanting to listen to them for a while now.

I've been mostly playing the same shit for a while now (a few Chopin preludes, a couple of easier Bach pieces, a couple contemporary OSTs.) All of it is very short.

I plan on concentrating on the Chopin etudes, now that I can finally play op 10 no 1 pretty well (also practicing the Godowsky transcriptions).

Listening to Scriabin's etude: very beautiful.

Do you have a formal musical education? Also, m or f?
>>
>>38378616

I'd imagine the only people who've heard them are people like me who hang around those obscure little classical music channels on YT (or maybe that's just me).

I'm surprised to see that myself.

>>
>>38378764

When I'm angry I play music, not listen to it.

It doesn't really matter what I play, I just play it angrily. It helps.
>>
>>38378676
What is the appeal of metal? If you want angry killing music, clearly industrial is the way to go.
>>
>>38378634
I just finished listening to Medtner's Piano Quintet and thought it was nice but I'm not sure I would consider it his magnum opus; maybe it will grow on me.

I took piano lessons for 8 years until I graduated from high school at which point I quit but continued to play on my own. 12 years later and I'm a wizard (male) who plays piano to forget that I don't have any friends.
Piano pieces only sound advanced when you don't know them -- for example, that Chopin etude Op 10 no 1 sound incredibly impressive but I'm sure it's a lot easier than it sounds since it's just some relatively basic arpeggios which most pianists should have practiced for hundreds of hours, right? I've heard the Godowsky transcriptions are pretty hardcore though. Good on you :3 I hope you keep it up and I'm sure you'll be able to play whatever you want.

It's been too long since I've thought about my top 10 of all time, and that's not something I would just randomly come up with. I can name at least my recent top 10 though

My number one of all time forever is David Bowie, and my favorite song of his is "Heroes". Bowie will forever and always be a my favorite musician.

2. Boris - Flood
3. Tallest Man on Earth - King of Spain

5. Run the Jewels - Sea Legs
6. Balmorhea - Settler
7. The National - Lemonhead
8. Mouse on the Keys - Seiren
9. Sufjan Stevens - John My Beloved
10. The xx - Dangerous

>or example, that Chopin etude Op 10 no 1 sound incredibly impressive but I'm sure it's a lot easier than it sounds since it's just some relatively basic arpeggios which most pianists should have practiced for hundreds of hours, right?

Kinda true, with the exception that I never bothered to play arpeggios, so I had to internalise them from scratch when practicing it. It's easy to remember, I'll give you that, which makes it easier to learn/practice, although I was surprised how stubborn it was to being played consistently well and at a fast enough tempo. Took me over a year of essentially daily practice, while hurdling several skill barriers.

>I've heard the Godowsky transcriptions are pretty hardcore though.

There's a YT channel called "David Stanhope": he has a series on the Godowsky transcriptions of Op. 10, where he plays them (very well) and breaks them down. It's thrilling stuff for any pianist, highly recommended.
They are hardcore, but after watching that series they at least seem tackle-able.

>12 years later and I'm a wizard (male) who plays piano to forget that I don't have any friends.

I've found that music and hentai are (mostly) good replacements for friends.

> I hope you keep it up and I'm sure you'll be able to play whatever you want.

Thanks a lot. I appreciate the encouragement.

>>
>>38378910

Well, Bach is pretty much considered the pinnacle of good taste in music, but high-tempo jazz is also considered up there (even though I haven't listened to a lot of jazz, I prefer late-romantic classical).
Some people versed in classical music would probably say that Alkan (I mentioned him in my list) is shit taste, but then again most people have never heard of him so I can get away with that.

What do you listen to? (I am not judgmental at all).

Damn. Well you're going to be pleasantly surprised at how easy the next piece with similar arpeggios will be for you.

Very nice, different pieces/artists. Never heard of them before, but I'm liking them a lot. I'm hearing a little Michael Nyman influence in the second DMST one (didn't feel much from the first one though).
