It doesn't convey confidence. It doesn't make you look cool. It is so pedestrian and uninspired.
Getting a "hey" feels like someone going "I'm just going to throw down this invitation for interaction and scurry back to hide. I'm going to initiate a conversation in this simple way because I want YOU to take the lead. I'm only contacting you so YOU have to say something interesting to ME". Even if that isn't your intention, it still feels like it when you get a "hey".

Even as a man, I have gotten the dreaded "hey" before. And I can tell you, getting a "hey" is a chore. It's something you don't know whether you have to respond to out of politeness, whether you should just ignore it. You don't know what the senders intentions are, or what they expect you to do or say. You are at a complete loss with how to respond. It just hangs over your head the whole day and you just want it out of your life. Most of the time (and I think this is what most people do) I just let it slide. Try not to think about it and hope it goes away.

I'm not saying you need to type your life story as an introduction or ask personal questions or whatever. But you could have said ANYTHING else and it still would have been better than "hey". You could have said "I'm coming to kill you" and that would have been better. At least a woman knows exactly how to respond to that. But "hey" is just another confusing little annoyance that oft times is too much of a chore to deal with.

The only thing worse than "hey" is typing "hey", but with an emoticon. If you have ever done that before, repent now, because that is just stomach churningly disgusting.
Don't ever EVER send a "hey", especially to a woman. It rarely works and makes people think you are a pest.
