French would be the most useful language for me to learn but it really does grate my soul, along with Spanish and Occitan apparently.

Kinda stuck between German (ancestry) and Japanese (very nice sounding)

It's the language spoken in southern France (She was from Toulouse.). It sounds like a mix of Italian and French. My French professor in school spoke it natively and had the accent, so I've been told I sound Italian sometimes by French speakers while speaking French.

I also think she was hitting on me in retrospect. Or maybe just being French, I don't know.

by all means learn japanese if you can manage it, but it's very hard and takes a long time.

French is really easy to learn as an English speaker. While our (English) grammar is German, much of our vocabulary is French, especially when it comes to things that were traditionally associated with the aristocracy in the middle ages such as good food and warfare.

Beef in English = boeuf in French.
Cavalry in English = Cavalerie in French.
"The countryside" in French is "la campagne" like in a military campaign.
Building in English translates to "batiment" in French, such as the battlements of a fortification.

My favorite though is the way the French say "going to do some errands" (faire des courses) originally meant to go on a military raid. I encountered it while translating the Marquis de Montcalm's journals from the French and Indian War for a paper and he kept referring to that which made no sense since he was out fighting. I eventually I figured it out and had a good laugh.
