If possible, do what I did and have your mom teach you to drive, first with neighborhood streets, then country roads, then busy strip malls, then highway roads. Not only will you bond with your mom, but she'll let you go at your own pace and there won't be anyone else breathing down your neck. I did this when I was 22 and it only took me a couple months to be comfortable enough on my own.
