once upon a time
there was a young prince
who was swaddled in riches
and tutored in all the princely ways

when the king his father died
he expected to assume the throne
but it was all a great deception
enacted in pretense out of low shame

he was not a prince but rather a beggar's son
nor his father a king but rather a landfill scavenger
the riches were plastic
and the tutors were bums

so he stumbled out into the city
with his gaudy baubles and nonsense filled head
and the workmanlike rabble there took their turns in beating him
smashing his treasures with their simple tools
denouncing his fantasies with their common sense
and returned him and his refuse to the pile where he belonged

this story is not embarrassing
but it is embarrassing that i wrote it
knowing you well know it already
from a better teller before me
