[barges into your sleeping quarters]
"Son, it's time you began to pursue a trade and help support the family hearth. Come hither, I shall escort you to Grunwald, the butcher, and have him take you under his wing as an apprentice. Remember to formally introduce yourself, look him in the eye, and bow in humble gratitude. Pack your belongings. We leave in the morrow."
But father, I've been using all of my precious time studying these charcoal etchings from the Orient! I intend to devote myself to the art of composition and eventually sail to Nippon to work under the Emperor's patronage!
How do people even become apprentices in real life, anyway. When I see positions for apprentices they require 4-6 years experience. I thought you were supposed to become an apprentice to get that experience. It's like trades are restricted to people who are lucky enough to have a father who already knew it. If you didn't work with your dad growing up, well, fuck you, go work retail you cuck.

Through nepotism or they get the apprenticeships, when they are 14, since the employer is legally allowed to pay them almost nothing at that age.
We are talking 300 euros nothing here.
Also, in Europe apprenticeship is compulsory, since you need that plus 3 years of tradeschool to obtain a permission to open a business.

"Surrendering on the battlefield is a fate worse than death, followed by death, son. I raised a son, not a wailing woman. Now pack your belongings. We leave in the morrow."

Surely he's a neet equivalent. He's failed utterly as a squire and his knight father is just trying to get him out of the house to make something of himself. This is purely trying to salvage any kind of expectation for him at all.

You'll dither no longer with the monasts, boy. They've a breadth of fixations born of their abstinence, and I'd heard tales that an elder monk might entreat a fascinated squire to don a petticoat. Thereafter they blame the lad for his wiles, declaring him an ensnarement for the loins of the devout

Even laymen affiliated with the Order of Knights of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem usually took religious vows, including chastity and monastic life. You either sinned or had me before joining the Order, but in any case there is no family hearth to support. And if I'm the son of a knight, even one that sinned, manual work, as a butcher no less, is beneath my standing.

My son! For too long hast thou sat, hunched and languid, lost in thy romances. Come, tidy away these tapestries, then away to the chapel to pray before readying thyself for departure. At noon we shall ride to Sir Walter's estate, and thou shalt take and kiss his hand firmly, and then ask him to make a squire of thee.
