I don't really agree with the comic but its point is well taken.

In my opinion it wasn't really slavery but what happened after that most affected black people; with southern share-cropping, the jim crow reconstruction and the criminalising of random stuff that black people did (setting up cheap prison labour as well), then the stigmatisation of black people moving out of the south from the turn of the century onwards with similar measures, that is what put working class black people in the current predicament.

They would've been able to act like other minority groups (Irish, Italians, Armenians, polish, Swedish, etc) and use communitarian politics and an integrationist attitude to 'help themselves up' if it wasn't for the intentional lowering of pay at the bottom of the US labour market in the early 70s. It is a disaster that the turn away from segregation came just too late for this to happen, if it did I think the US would be a very different place to what it is now.

I think this comic is somewhat disingenuous partly because affirmative action exists, and exists to mostly help middle or professional class black people while the working class languish. Also I would say that as working class white people are finding out with the opium epidemic, it is extremely hard to pull a community out of a malaise that deep and special programs seem to not really work all that well when it comes to working class communities. They need jobs for men basically to heal them.

But lots of people have been oppressed by lots of other people. Not just enslaved but genocided. The whole muh bootstraps argument is because people have pulled their communities back from worse fates and rebuilt. Such actions achieve more than blaming.

In the south it was more like 12.5% of the population were the legal owners and roughly 31% of households, in the south it was closer to 30% of families/households.

I think the main problem with the image is that it treats the spook of 'race' as a reality. The white person is depicted as representing slave-owners and ALSO representing a modern white adult, when even if you assume that any white individual had a slave-owning great-great grandfather, they're not the same person. A tiny minority of whites even owned slaves, and most whites weren't vastly better off. At one stage, there were more black female slave-owners than white slave-owners, because black female slaves tended to be manumitted first while males were manumitted later or not at all.

It would be nice to be able to recognise how black people are disadvantaged and experience ongoing racism in many ways, without somehow putting the blame on a white person born today.

It would also be nice to recognise the role roasties play in all of this. Black women feel entitled to compete against men in the workplace, while benefiting from gender quotas and the nature misandry of the people hiring, which leads to women working for government, the very institution that oppresses black men in large part.

Black Americans benefit off of the work done in sweatshops overseas by other impoverished people but will still complain about how someone touching their hair proves racism is alive.
