What comes to mind when you think of some of the most meaningful and memorable works of media you've experienced? Something that you have some sort of notable personal connection to or interest in, even if the work itself could be considered flawed, obscure, ridiculous, and so on. Books, comics, music, movies, videos, shows, animation, games, etc.

>Aku no Hana
Have you seen the anime or read the comic? I've only seen the anime. The style and mood was very memorable, as were certain scenes. I did like some things about it, but overall I thought the story was pretty silly and I finished it kind of wondering what I'd just watched.
>>
>>38155061
I'll try to give one of each medium you mentioned, but it's all pretty normie-tier 2bh and like you said all about the emotional attachment rather than quality. I'm sure you could easily list something that is superior for everything I post.

>Book
Curious incident of the dog in the night time

>Comic
Love and Rockets: Heartbreak Soup and Human Diastrophism

>Music
The Cure - Disintegration

>Film
The LoTR films, I have read the books but the films are very special to me despite some silly things

>Video
Not sure what you mean by this one, like a youtube video? This is probably my favourite thing on that site https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6t2YvyLqw3c

>show
Last Airbender

>animation
almost anything by Studio Ghibli could go here, or Welcome to the NHK

>games
Maybe Halo, I don't really play vidya now, but that was a big thing for me and my friendship group when I was in school

even with the preface I'm still probably going to be called a pleb
>>
>>38155518
Both. The anime was an 8/10 for me, as the animation was too distracting in some places and some episodes felt a bit pretentious. I liked the manga much better, even though it shared some of the "what did I just read" type stuff with the anime. It's not the best story I've read, perhaps, but one of the most memorable, and I still wish sometimes for a Nakamura-like girl to come into my life...

>It's not the best story I've read, perhaps, but one of the most memorable
I feel like being able to create a mood/ambiance is very important. Even if a story isn't necessarily so great in itself, by being strongly stylistic a work can still be meaningful, which is the undercurrent behind many classic anime like Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo where the overarching story is thin and progresses slowly and not much happens along that progression, but you still feel satisfied by the end of it.

I recall really liking the parts of the Aku no Hana anime where you can just drink in the scenery and the mood, it made me feel nostalgic.
>>
Koe no katachi is so over rated. The moral of the story is supposed to be against bullying but is in fact in support of it, the bully ends up in a loving relationship whereas the only ACTUALLY bullied person in the story remained such throughout the story and no one gave a shit. You can tell this was written by a roastie.
>>
For Video Games KOTOR and Dragon Age Origins.

KOTOR because it was the first game of its type I ever played. I was just astonished by it like. "Wow I can like... create my own character? And choose what I say and style my own personality around them? And companions react to what I say and they can fall in love with me and I can choose what to do" etc.

Then DAO increased that by 10 with how much control you had. It was just magic. Especially when it comes to socialising with companions. The campfire theme from Origins gives me so much nostalgia. There was a certain wonder about Origins that Bioware have never been able to repeat in DA sequels or any other Bioware games. I mean, Inquisition was good but it didn't have that wonder of Origins, they went in a different direction which was still fun and made a great game, but not a game that captured me like Origins. And while DA2 wasn't as bad as everyone said it was, it wasn't that good either.
>>
>>38155061
My problem with picking favourites is that I like a lot of different things equally but for different reasons and when I'm in different moods. As far as books go what would get closest to my personal holy book would be the silmarillion, the children of hurin specifically. Atla would be my favourite tv show probably but the rest is all to hard to pick favourites for.
>>38155686
I'd want to call you a pleb but I can't honestly say your choice of book movie animation or show are anything but great. I love them to although I wouldn't personally place any of them at my top except for Avatar the last Airbender wich is just the best fucking kids show ever made, and I don't say that lightly.
Halo is kinda pleb tier maybe but it's still good as far as games go, fps is kinda pleb taste but halo is definitely one of the least pleb among fps games.

I'll try to dig for what has been meaningful to me, and hopefully someone who has yet to experience some of this can give it a try.

Movies:
>Castaway on the Moon
Centered around romance between two broken and isolated people. That's basically my ideal and I like media that has this as a strong theme. Castaway on the Moon is also focused on hikikomoridom and island survival, which are also concepts I like.
>Jin-Roh
Similarly to above, has that romantic theme, but is also stylistic and heavy, making it memorable. Also, alternate-history setting, power armor, and guns.

Games:
>Lost in Blue
An honestly shitty game, but it had cool mechanics, and moreover this fueled my fantasy of pair survival, surviving on an island with a cute girl. As flawed of a game as this is I love it as an idea and really wish there could be a remake of this that would implement the concept better.
>STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl
Meaningful to me for it's sense of loneliness and adventure.
>The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Meaningful to me for it's sense of adventure. It's great art style, music, and characters make it really nostalgic for me. Going on an epic adventure to save your sister I always found to be great daydream material. To be honest I barely touched this game myself, I just recall watching my brother play it all the way through.

>>38156289
I don't know how much I agree with whatever message the author was going for, but the concept alone I liked and find it a very worthwhile story, the two broken people trying to make things right. The manga was definitely flawed with shit I'm glad they cut out for the movie, but I still highly recommend reading it for all the good memorable parts the movie skipped. If you read the manga and see his monologues, the protagonist's thoughts on loneliness are very relatable.
>>
>>38156632
I've only read the manga so don't know what they cut out for the movie. I didn't find the mc particularly relatable because none of the characters around him were realistic.

>>
>>38156620
I thought this was rather good but I couldn't personally relate to it, so even though it was emotional and nostalgic it kind of just fell out of my memory anyway.

>>38156771
I would recommend watching the movie too because it somehow felt distinct enough that it was something of a different experience, even if you already know what happens. Granted, I haven't read the manga in a while, so it would feel somewhat fresh to me. If you hate the core of the story then I guess you shouldn't suffer through the two hour movie, but I thought the movie was better-paced, and it also has value as being emotionally cathartic, albeit arguably over-dramatic, if nothing else. I sure like watching people cry together. While the comic was still running, I remember this having first given me my interest in sign language. As well as fantasies of having a cute deaf girlfriend.
>>38157025
It's worth a watch/read.

The bit that destroyed me was when the train finally gets there. And he's just all but given up. He was panicking that he was way late but now he's way too late. It's over, the dream is dead, she's gone.

But he figures he'll get off anyways, just stay at the station for the night and head back, maybe she'll come back in the morning. But then his letter blows away. His letter for love. It's all ruined. And he bursts into tears. He was so excited for that day, mentally prepared for it, imagined how amazing it'd be to see his best friend that he loves. And its all went wrong, all ruined.

But then he continues on. Then he sees it. He sees her, and she's still waiting for him at 11pm, having fallen asleep. She's been there all this time, waiting for him, worrying about him too, the same feelings of dread.

And you see his face light up, he made it to see her, and his face just goes from complete agony to just elation and then she wakes up and her face completely lights up too. Nothing is ruined, they both made it to meet each other! Then they have food together.

Just the panic and worry and how shitty the day was, only for it to be all okay in the end and his overjoyed expression broke me.

Continuing with books.

>Notes from Underground
>I Am Legend
>Frankenstein
>Ham on Rye
>Factotum
>Battle Royale
>Kokoro
>No Longer Human
>The Stranger
All of the above have the concept of loneliness and being an outsider as a theme, to varying degrees. Basically obligatory reading for /r9k/. Some have particularly amazing monologues, particularly Notes from Underground, to my memory.

5 Centimeters Per Second happened to me in real life.
>talking to Japanese girl

>years pass and we become good friends
>some hints at feelings between us
>neither of us confess anything
>she is working to become a teacher in japan
>im too poor to visit her
>more time passes
>she moved on and got with another guy
That's the general run down. There was more to the story, but you get the idea.

This feeling of wondering what could have been really hurts. In a romantic context it's hard for me to relate to having missed opportunities though.
That's kind of miserable if you related really well. How did you meet her? Were you penpals?
>>
>>38158010
She got married and had a daughter. I like to think maybe I almost got married and started a family. It's been a year since we stopped talking. We don't hate each other or anything. I just told her my feelings and that it was probably better that we talk less. It's been about a year now sinve I last messaged her. We met on a site to help learn languages and used email, skype, and facebook to talk. I kept the letters and stuff she sent me. I locked them in a big safe.

A long distance relationship over the Internet or something has always seemed very romantic to me for some reason, but as you know it's extremely difficult to be close to another person that way, and even if you've known them for a while, it's easier to end up drifting apart and building separate lives.
I have a Chinese penpal right now but I don't have romantic feelings for her, or at least I don't want to since it wouldn't be fair to her and it wouldn't be good for me either if I would just feel that attraction to her out of convenience because I don't talk to any other girls. As much as I badly want a relationship, I wouldn't be capable of sustaining one, so I don't know what I would do if she expressed interest in me. Fortunately that's incredibly unlikely, especially since my Chinese is shit and we don't talk that often or that deeply at all to begin with, even if we've known each other for around two years. For some reason it makes me feel very tired to think about this topic.

Have you had other romantic prospects all along, appealing or otherwise? Did you try to pursue anything with a girl in this time? I don't understand to what degree you were attracted to her, whether you slowly realized you were attracted to her and were weighing your options or if you were always infatuated with her and intent on a relationship with her and no one else.

It was not my intention to have a relationship, but over time it just kind of happens. We messaged each other almost everyday for years and we had a lot in common. Just keep a few thousand dollars handy in case you do decide to visit her. There was one girl I was sort of interested in but nothing real serious. Towards the end, I really liked the Jap girl. I wish I could go back and sell my things or something to visit her. I think about it a lot, but I try not to.

I also like Koe no Katachi.

I guess it's far easier said than done, and trite at that, but in my limited experience I would attempt not to worry about her now and would just be glad for what time you had spent knowing her, and for what you figure you gained from it. Naturally you already know this, but it's best to remind yourself that getting stuck thinking about what could have been hurts a lot and won't help you. I just have a hard time imagining really loving someone to begin with, and I hope it doesn't ever happen to me because it wouldn't end well.

Dead Dead Demon's Dededededestruction
It's the most contemporary piece of media I've encountered so far. The incorporation of social media and technology into the narrative, the constant political turmoil and the apathy of the characters, everyday life moving mundanely forward while the world may end any day- really resounds with my NEET-averse-to-the-politically-charged-landscape-of-the-internet sensibilities.

Everything is so fleeting in this movie, creates the sensation of the grand passing of time over generations. It's both sad and comforting for me.

>Anime
Serial Experiments Lain
An emotional connection in a negative (not bad) way. Watched this at a time when I was having an existential crisis. Really fueled the nightmares, felt I could see my own psychosis mirrored in the show. It was a terribly depressive period in my life but I feel that this, the philosophy I was reading at the time, and the drugs I was taking all combined into an existential gauntlet I came out of as a stronger person.

>Game
Donkey Kong Country
The only game my older sister ever played with me. She mostly kept to herself growing up but sometimes she'd play dkc with me. I'd let her play diddy because she couldn't use dk very well. I'd die on purpose so she could play, then watch her slowly move through the levels. She'd always quit after two or three but it always felt special when she'd play because I didn't have anyone else to play video games with.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
IMO, it's the perfect expression of young love and making mistakes. I've only seen it once, but holy hell is it pretty. It's that kind of art that gives you nostalgia for a thing you never had, and amazes you with how beautiful and meaningful it appears compared to the emptiness of the rest of your life.

>Music
Probably Tsumanne by Shinsei Kamattechan. It's hard to explain why, but at the time, I was quickly losing all attachment to life, and this album is both phenomenal and touched upon themes in my life (even about being a NEET) that moved me almost to tears.

>Video games
Final Fantasy VII. I went into the game knowing about Aeris' death, and so every moment became very sentimental and pretty. In a lot of ways it's a coming-of-age tale, and this is especially apparent in Midgar and other places along the main story line like the Golden Saucer. It's kind of life The Girt Who Leapt Through Time because it has a sort of nostalgic childlike sense to it as well. Some highlights are the brothel segment in Midgar and when you meet Yuffie.

It upsets me how useless it is to talk about art or how we felt in certain instances because there's almost no proper way to convey it. I also hope to add something from philosophy onto this list, though I'm not totally sure it will feel as important.

I was wondering if I should have been more specific about that, but I was wanting to be as general as possible. >It upsets me how useless it is to talk about art or how we felt in certain instances because there's almost no proper way to convey it.
I know what you mean. An element of this is feeling frustration and hopelessness with all the feelings that a certain work will give you that end up bottled up inside, and you struggle to do something tangible with them and make them into something real, just having them sit there and fade in your mind until they lose the visceral closeness and color they once had, even if you know that they are still important to you, for whatever silly reason. Anything from a classic work of literature to a shitty comic book can do this, so you're never safe. I usually try to write a journal entry when I have this feeling of being excited about something, but it's so hard to describe the feelings even to myself that what I write just feels useless and bland and unable to incite the same feelings later on.
