As I've gotten older, OP, I've found that you lose the patience for depth in videogames over time somewhat. I don't play anything but time wasters, phone games and roguelikes on steam. Finishing a newer Final Fantasy title would be like pulling teeth for me. I just don't fucking care enough.

HBO ruined videogame storylines for me. There's no possibility of a AAA title resulting in an emotional response from me anymore or any sort of shock. I purposefully have to download an indie title that I know "might" be sad to even have a chance to feel sad for the characters. This entire generation of games is so contrived and going through the motions.

Not specifically, just in general, decently written films and shows have ruined gaming storylines. I just can't care about something I see coming a mile away, or the constant "every-man" main character.

Video games suck nowadays. Go back just 10 years and compare it to what we have now.
Portal, bioshock, half life 2 ep2, CoD that didn't suck, halo that didn't suck, mass effect that didn't suck, bethesda that didn't suck, gears of war that didn't suck, it was an unbelievable age of quality compared to the wasteland we have now.
Witcher and dark souls are the only games I could call good that I've played in the last... Idk 3-5 years.
