I don't think you ever do, you just get good at suppression or you don't.

If the world wears away at you enough, you'll automatically start becoming a leather-skinned monster. You don't get a callus by avoiding work and pain.

I like to go on long walks in the sun, always makes me feel like I'm going through hell and toughening up, especially when it gets tough and I keep my posture/attitude in check.

Maybe my perception of hard is a bit off, but I don't imagine many people are alternating between running and walking in 90+ degree weather for 3 hours a day. It also helps with being overly self conscious because so many people see you looking like madman, even my mom thinks I'm crazy.
