anki decks are good for kanji learning vocab along with the kanji.
if you want to learn writing them id suggest using the exercises in your genki workbooks where you write them over and over, thats good for not mistaking them for other kanji as well, it really drills them into your brain

i'm still bad at kanji to this day but i trained myself by going out and just trying to identify stores and shops that way. A lot of ikayaki or ramen stands have their own kanji for what kind of store they are

also learning the "stroke pattern" of how kanji is written. Like what order to do the "strokes" are. there is an actual japanese word for this method but i forgot. it really helps doing that and writing because writing it down a lot instills the kanji in your brain

sorry really stoned right now everyone's alseep

I've used a variety of resources, it doesn't really matter which ones you use. Just work through the textbooks and practice making sentences on Lang-8. Only recommendation with which textbooks is try to get ones that have a series from beginner to advanced, that way you've got a more consistent progression instead of jumping from textbook to textbook.

>vocab and kanji
For kanji, the kanji master N5-N1 Arc academy textbooks are pretty good. Add one page a day from the book into anki (put the reading and one of the meanings of the kanji as the front, and then try to remember how to write/visualise it), it starts off nice and slow, and as you go up the N levels you get more and more kanji per page. Generally your kanji reviews will be really manageable. I only get 50-60 a day which takes like 10-15 minutes to do. Making yourself write out the kanji when you're doing the review will improve the effectiveness of the reviews.

You can also use those kanji master textbooks to mine for vocab. Each kanji has several example sentences and some words using the kanji, add all unknown words to anki along with example sentences. There are some formal or unusual phrases/words in there but they're mostly marked with a triangle so you can just ignore them. The bonus to adding that vocab is that you automatically learn and remember the readings of that particular kanji by memorising the associated vocab so there's no need to go out of your way to memorise that shit.

From there, read as much native stuff as possible. Ideally you don't want to be rushing to the dictionary every other word, so try to find stuff on your level. Children's stories are good if you're a real beginner. Reading will boost your kanji and vocab recognition memory.

I don't recommend doing the core decks unless you have autism focus or adderall, you'll likely just burn out. Take it slowly and steadily, absorb what you can, reinforce it with anki and reading and everything will follow.

>>38138332
>I got pretty far into Japanese before losing interest during the kanji grind. How do you recommend I get back into it? How did you get through core 2000?
Like I said in >>38138224 I'd stay away from core decks if you can. They're just a shit grind. The textbooks I mentioned are better because they're grouped by theme and come with example sentences and vocab you can anki which helps cement the meaning/readings and brings it all together. I should mention I've only memorised about 1000 kanji, that's so far enough to get by with general reading. Every now and then I come across kanji I haven't memorised yet and it's just a quick dictionary look-up to find the reading. Often it's a word I already know and seeing the kanji over and over again makes you end up remembering it even without putting in much effort.

tl;dr You want your kanji learning process to be natural and connected to the other things you're learning or reading. Anki core decks are just an unconnected, monotonous grind

I have taken at least five semesters of Japanese and it can be quite difficult to utilize everything you have learned. I find the Kanji and conjugation to be pretty easy. It can be fun to learn kanji, but it takes a lot of dedication. I can get pretty into it for a while, but then I have other classes I need to focus on and it really throws me off. It is really hard to go back into it. I was doing at least an hour of kanji a day and it can be really hard to make time for that every day. I was trying to learn to read and write about 50 kanji per week. It really takes a lot longer to be able to write than to read, while still reviewing and remembering the past kanji. Sadly, the next level class isn't being offered so I think I will just read some books like genki and my class textbook. I tried a little bit of online 1 on 1 classes and they seem okay, but I haven't really stayed with it. I think I will go back to it soon.

>>
>>38140785
I got to only about 300. It is definitely possible if you make time for it. The thing is my progress was slowed by the amount of review I had to do. If you take a break from it you will remember some of them, but not nearly all.
I like and have used anki, but I only really use it for vocabulary. I use a fantastic app called "Kanji Study." It is a few dollars but it has everything you will ever need in learning kanji.

...but that can be one of the same. I mean, you'll need to study radicals to break down kanji into easy to identify pieces, but that's no biggie. The readings can be a pain in the ass, but for that you just drill vocab flashcards and read as much as you can. I'm at 7k vocab cards (500+ hours just in Anki alone) and I still feel like my Japanese is baby-tier ala NHK News Easy. I really need to read more ;_;
People really need to not let Kanji psyche them out -- ~2200 really isn't that big of a number.

Spending a lot of time studying is useless if you're not using it. It's really key to be writing shit on Lang-8 and trying to read stuff. Make sure you spend just as much time using the stuff you're learning as you do studying it. Otherwise it just gets progressively boring because it seems so detached from any real-world practicality.

If you're getting stuck on particular grammar, the three dictionaries of Japanese grammar are absolutely amazing at explaining grammar and breaking down how to construct a given sentence with it and going over some of the finer points of usage, as well as explaining how the usage and nuance compares to related grammar that might be similar enough to be confusing. The three books are A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar, A Dictionary of Intermediate Japanese Grammar, and A Dictionary of Advanced Japanese Grammar. If you can't afford them I'm sure there'll be PDF versions around somewhere. While I was in Japan there were numerous times where I just couldn't quite get my head around some of the stuff taught in the school and those books cleared it right up.
>>
>>38138144
I'm not learning Japanese... I tried learning it in highschool and just couldn't wrap my head around it, so instead I'm learning Russian.

I've already memorized the alphabet and basic introductions/manners. If I keep the pace up I'll be able to hold a small conversation soon!
>>
>>38138144
I'm spending a solid 10 minutes per day doing Japanese on Duolingo, so I'll be able to hold a basic conversation in about 10 years.
>>
>>38138144
Have taken a break on doing new vocabulary while studying for tests, but I'll start up again next week. At least I've gotten really good at the ~200 or so words I already know.

Now I just need to study grammar and I'll be good to go for reading picture books.
