Like most skills, you just have to accept sucking at it for a long time and practice regularly until you get over the hump where it then starts to become more fun than frustrating.

Granted, you then hit territory where it's really easy to stagnate. I've been playing guitar for ten years and I should be leagues better than I am now, but I still enjoy doing it.
>>

REEEEEEEEE I JUST WANT TO PLAY SONGS FROM MY FAVORITE ALBUMS ALREADY
I'D LIKE TO PLAY IN A ROCK BAND AT LEAST ONCE BEFORE I DIE
>>
No one picks up a guitar and immediately starts shredding.

You can either give up or accept the fact that it's gonna take a while before you're any good.

I've managed to get pretty decent at guitar. Though I play classical guitar. Which means even knowing guitar can't really help me with women unless they're especially cultured. Or maybe hispanic.

Guitar is easy as fuck. Are you just bad with your hands? A brainlet or something? It couldn't be easier, you just finger the frets and there you go you're playing guitar.

OP, I learned guitar in highschool and I keep learning by watching this guys' videos.

https://www.youtube.com/user/martyzsongs/videos

He's really informative and keeps it simple. I started off like shit, it took me a few minutes to switch chords and now I'm really good. Took me a few months to improve by practicing at least half an hour a day.

Start by becoming familiar with chords; not only the finger position on the frets, but also their sound, and learning a song is really just a matter of connecting these chords together. It's that easy. Even some of the most popular songs use less than 5 chords or so.

Give up now and save yourself time.
If you're playing to be good, you really honestly should give up. because
A: it's gonna take years to be good. I've been playing for over a decade and i'm still not that good
B:If you just want something to be "good" at and you don't enjoy playing guitar itself, you wont be able to be good

do something you actually enjoy instead

Could I plug some of my original guitar stuff here or will you guys get angry?

I also outgrew video games, so it's not like I've got that as a timekiller

It's harder to learn anything as an adult than it is as a kid, but you can still do it.

The problems most people have, whether for learning an instrument, a language, or any subject through primarily self-study are

1. They are not patient and methodical in how they approach the subject. For example, people will buy an instrument and a music book (or watch videos on youtube), but won't go at a moderate pace, instead they want to rush ahead and overestimate when they are ready to proceed to the next lesson. They think if they can fumble through the notes of a piece that's good enough, even if the tempo is bad and there are lots of mistakes. Consequently they eventually feel overwhelmed when they race ahead too far and discover they actually are still very poor at the subject.

2. They don't arrange to get good feedback. This is a huge problem when you don't have a teacher. In music, you need to hear yourself if you don't have someone else trained to do so. You need to record yourself playing and listen to it objectively. It sucks to do it because you hear yourself and how bad you sound, but that's how you get better.

Basically, go at a glacially slow pace, be very methodical and make sure, through testing yourself, that you have mastered every concept before going onto the next one. This is true for ANY sort of self study.

The more time you spend with an instrument, the better you become at seeing your faults. This isn't that uncommon of a thing.

When I was on my 3rd year of playing guitar I thought I was hot shit. Now I'm on my 7th and I realize I'm pretty mediocre.
>>

>>
>>38128381
It's more you reap what you sow.
I'm not a shredmaster, i never cared about technical proficiency. most of my playing is garage rock or shoegaze, fucking around with pedals. So now I'm really good at coming up with riffs, but no i can't play scales fast or anything
>>
>spent 15 years playing guitar
>got really good
>played lead guitar in several bands
>stopped playing when i went to grad school
>haven't played in 7 years
>totally suck now

You also have to practice constantly if you want to stay good once you get there. Now I'm a lame rythym player at best whereas when i was at my best there wasn't a solo i couldn't learn in a few hours.
>>
>>38129167
I hear that, I stopped playing metal for maybe six months and now I can't play lead fast at all
>>
>>38127066

My fretting hand is also the hand I fap with so when my forearm got super veiny from "double duty" I had to choose between guitar and fapping...so I chose fapping. I made the right choice
>>
>>38129167

I have taken a few multi-year breaks. It takes about two months to get the finger strength and muscle memory back. At first it certainly does feel like you're back to being a beginner, fingers no work, coordination is all befuddled, but it comes back more quickly than you'd expect with daily practice.

Play something you enjoy, anon. Also if you choose something then learn it anyways, even if you feel like you can't do it. This is the only way (I play on a cheap Cort strat, so it's not about the equipment at all).
>>
>Why can't I be good at something without pratice, training and time?

Because fuckwad, if anyone could do it there would be a lot more shitty rock bands.
>>
>>38129848
If anyone could do it they wouldn't be shitty :^)
>>
>>38129868
Oh trust me, there are a lot of people who can do simple tasks and still fuck them up and make you wonder how they can fuck up something so simple. So yeah they would be shitty, trying to combine some garbage heavily modified guitar from a song they already know with some acid jazz bass and drum rhythm thinking that their unique sound is good.

Don't worry about it man, everyone starts not knowing anything
A pickup is what "picks up" the sound your strings make - marked red in the image
>>
>>38130140

Here ya go, anon. Everything you ever wanted to know about passive guitar pickups and how they work.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjS17I6inbk
>>
>>38127066
Its not though.
Step one. Play this note/cord to work on your fingering for HOURS.
Step two. Repeat step one until all notes/chords are learned and muscle memory is a thing.
Step three. Learn your fucking scales and harmonica god fucking damn it.
Step four. Learn a song.
Step 5. Enjoy playing guitar.

Expect each step to take 1 to several months but realize each individual step is really fucking easy.
>>
>>38130511

It's better for the student's sanity to mix learning songs throughout all of those steps. Sitting in front of chord and scale charts for hours will make anyone bored and discouraged.

Best way is to use a particular song as an example piece for how various chords and scales have been used to compose it. eg, here is song, it uses these chords, and is in this key. Learn song and chords at same time. Identify to student how the notes fall on the scale associated with the key the song is in.
>>
>>38127376
Bretty easy slow down the track to 75% speed hear the lowest ringing note when the chord hits so you know the root note and then just figure it out by thinking "bottom 3 or top 3 strings".
>>
>>38130337
i mean whatever helps u sleep at night i guess my dude
>>
>>38130646
But it builds a rock solid and unshakable foundation you can use later to become the best kind of composer.
>>
>>38129743
It's good for the price desu. Only problem I have is that when I hold down the 3rd fret, 2nd string, it makes a really loud buzz even if I hold it down strong enough. Not sure if I need new strings or something.
>>
>>38131287

Of course, but you need a mix in the curriculum. It isn't helpful to learn chords/scales/modes outside of the context of composed music.
>>
>>38131383

Raise the bridge saddle for that string slightly. Look up youtube video on how to do truss rod adjustments. Your neck may or may not need an adjustment, but the video will explain to you how to indentify if it does or not.
