"Son, all those eWorld and AOL things are nice and all, but nothing beats showing up there, speaking with the manager, standing up tall, addressing him as 'Sir,' and giving him a nice, firm handshake.
go on craigslist services section. find some random lawn mower guys and use their info.
Just lie if you have none. I've never had a company call any of my references.

It really fucking isn't. Spend 60 minutes making your resume look approachable and decent, then fill out applications to places based on who is likely to be hiring.
It's also worth noting the "seasons" that various industries hire.
>Fast food, grocers, etc look in the fall, when the HS kids go back to school
>Construction looks in the spring, when it's not snowing anymore
>Call centers look year round
>Data entry looks at the beginning of summer, when college students graduate
>Manufacturing looks when their business starts booming again after layoffs (roughly a 1-2 year cycle for many businesses)
>Outside Home Depot will hire you for day labor on the spot, above the spics
None of these positions require education past a HS diploma, if that.
That last option, the Home Depot day labor, is good for determining if construction is a good fit for you.
It also serves to get references. Just work for a guy for a week or two on a project he's running and he'll give you a decent reference.

I just put my teachers from high school.
I put some numbers I found on my school's website.
I got the job and I'm pretty sure they never even checked, or maybe they called, and my coach or teacher wasn't there.
