Newfag here. How has 4chan culture change overtime? Give a timeline of the great epochs. I started browsing only in 2013 and the dominant memes were already pepe/wojak.

It sucks to say it but I sort of define the epochs based on major media coverage. Because every time 4chan got major media coverage it brought a wave of newfriends who would have NEVER discovered the website otherwise. These surges of people were so large that each time it happened the culture of the website was changed forever. This is why rules 1 and 2 were always the most important. It's also why I use 2008 as the cutoff, that was the first year that 4chan got serious international mass media coverage. It was because of Project Chanology and after that the website was changed forever. It brought a huge wave of people who thought 4chan was some kind of organization bent on bringing truth and justice to the world. The most recent epoch is thanks to /pol/ getting Donald Trump elected.

So yeah in my mind I think of 4chan like pre and post Project Chanology or pre and post Fappening or pre and post Trump.

Also the other big definer of epochs would be whenever new boards are added. /r9k/ is huge in my mind for that reason because it created a kind of bridge between /b/ and the rest of the boards. It was originally like a sort of slow /b/ but it's evolved so much over the years it's really cool. Every other board has a topic so it can't really evolve and /b/ has always just been /b/ so /r9k/ is unique in that it's truly grown and developed in a unique and unrestrained way. I'm sure someone could write a college dissertation on it. Also I absolutely think of a posting epoch as pre and post /sp/. I don't even post there but I don't think any other blue board has exerted more influence over the general culture of the site. So much of what's common demeanour EVERYWHERE on the site originated on /sp/.

Nah. early early first iteration 4chan was /a/ anime, /b/ random, /c/ cute, /h/ hentai, /y/ yaoi from what i recall.

/b/ was shit like guro(most from a now dead hardcore BDSM site that also had death videos), the occasional Pizza, and genuinely random shit.
/c/ i only vaguely remember as going between people drawing, posting cute anime girls, and posting /h/ content I didn't fully understand at the time like Bondage Fairies or Alice in Sexland.
Shit died for a bit then i remember checking back one day and suddenly we had proto-/k/ and my lifr as a crazy motherfucker was assured.

I don't recall /b/ ever having been /vip/ but i could have missed that entirely.

Does anyone else remember "initiation" threads?

I don't know what else to call them but it was usually someone dumping some fucked up comic or series of images. People used to dump stuff like that all the time just because the reactions from new posters was always so funny.

There was also a sort of culture of "you're not a real 4channer until you've seen this thread before" and usually the sentiment "what you're feeling is the weak part of you dying".

Just noticed no one really makes threads like that anymore. Also if you've never seen this comic dumped you're not a real 4channer.

I've been here since late 2004, my dude. It's been a wild ride, watching our "seekrit club" become the main culture of the entire fucking internet. I remember when Megaloop was on the front page, and it blew my mind. For a while, I keep wondering where I had seen all that weird, fucked-up hentai I keep thinking about, then I remembered 4chan used to have a guro board. I was 16 when I found this place - a guy on the SSX messageboard I frequented kept posting linked pictures from there, and I got curious. I followed 'em back and have been here ever since. I remember /b/ was so slow at night, you could refresh the page over and over and nothing would move.

I saved pic related in May 2005 - up until that point, it was the funniest thing I'd ever seen! I would stare at that third frame and laugh until I almost threw up, over and over.

The site has always more or less sucked. But then every once in a while there's something so insanely funny or absurd or entertaining or interesting that you stay hooked no mater what.

Also people forget what 4chan was like before /soc/ that was the original and most important containment board. Cam whores used to legit ruin every board on the site, nothing else was more infuriating. Just go on /soc/ right now and imagine all those posts were intermixed with EVERYWHERE else on the site. People would straight up cam whore in the middle of really good and popular threads because they weren't getting enough attention elsewhere. It still makes me angry just thinking about it. Also people would dump gore and CP if you disagreed with them or if they didn't like your thread so I don't miss that either.

What Did He Mean By This
>>
>>38097927

It was really cute and sincere when it first opened. Lots of random interesting threads and green text story threads. Then for some reason or another people felt compelled to post their personal problems / blogs in /r9k/. I think it was mostly because other boards had topics so if you blogged you got banned and /b/ would just ignore / troll blog threads.

So /r9k/ slowly became the unofficial board for posting about all your inrl problems. Because most robots were pure hearted and intelligent they would try to help the blog posters to the best of their abilities but eventually it started to flood the board because people would get decent advice so people would make more blog posts.

Moot became aware of this and tried to help by creating /adv/ an actual board specifically for posting about your inrl problems. However people kept blogging in /r9k/ anyway because /adv/ was slow and you'd get more / better replies on /r9k/.

Eventually this drove off many of the boards best posters who just got annoyed by seeing the board filled to the brim with people blogging and asking for advice on inrl stuff day in day out. It was always the exact same shit "there's this girl and i like her but she doesn't know it what do i do" or some variation on that theme. It was just tedious shit and clogged up the front page (this is pre-catalogue).

It was at this point that things got bad. With no one to give out advice the advice seekers began to wallow in their own shit. They would more or less just bitch and complain to each other and the board became a giant cesspool of people competing in the my-life-is-worse-than-yours-olympics.

Eventually these people stopped wallowing in their own pity but instead of trying to better themselves inrl everyone just became bitter and slowly the board became known for what is still it's most iconic trait to this day: misogyny.
>>
>>38098306

It was at this point that moot got so fed up he pulled the plug. /r9k/ was supposed to be a sort of intelligent utopian /b/ essentially a /b/ where no one could rehash the same replies over and over thus stimulating intelligent conversation. It worked in the beginning but becoming known as the sober and intelligent part of the site it only attracted people seeking advice for their problems. When the amount of those people multiplied and everyone else jumped ship the remaining posters turned bitter and became hateful and misogynistic nihilists with nothing but contempt for everyone and everything.

So moot said fuck it. He straight up deleted the board because it was so toxic and garbage. Then a bunch of people petitioned him to bring it back and that it still had its moments, so eventually he did and it was slightly better after that. However it eventually more or less went back to its old ways.

Then came the greatest epoch in /r9k/'s history which was when everyone finally got bored of being sad and for a few months got extremely weird and meta. pee pee poo poo and /mischief/ threads ruled the board. everything before and after this is irrelevant. as someone who's been on the board on and off since day 1 this was by far the most creative and hilarious time in the boards history. the influence of that short period still remains to this day but it will never be fully re-captured again. i don't know what it was but for some reason everyone just collectively when absolutely mad. new memes and variations on memes were being created weekly and it was glorious.

I still believe the best of /r9k/ could be yet to come but it certainly feels like we're in a slump at the moment.

Don't feel ancient, can barely remember anything from back then. All the shit that happened around the time went right by me. It sure as hell doesn't feel like 11 years.
>>
>>38098306
This is all due to dumb "containment board" theory. We had "ronery threads" on /a/, NEET threads on /jp/, and some analogue of those on /v/, and they were all fine. People who wanted conversation instead of Reddit-tier topicalposting could have it, and everyone else could have their own fun, "at no one else's expense", to paraphrase a janitor meme. You could stay on a board, adapt to the culture, get to know the people there, and have a grand old time.

But then A-San (whom I think either invented or popularized herein the term "blogposting") got a bug up his autistic ass about it, and lead everyone on a purge of those threads, which was easy to do, because sad people are gross, and it's okay to shit on them. Suddenly, threads that were okay for two, three years had to move, and since /b/ was really fast and unusable, there was really only one place they could go: /r9k/. At this point, you have the collected, concentrated sadness of the entire website, divorced from any kind of support group or context, just shoveled into one big honking mire of despair. Now, thanks to the one-eyed wonder weasel and his magic car-home, they're not sadposting and then going and playing video games or something. Instead, they're just sitting here, talking to OTHER sad people, and commiserating about how hellish everything is, which as you can imagine isn't exactly conducive to recovery and a healthy, optimistic outlook.

And of course, everyone blames the sad people instead of the idiots who were dumb enough to think that severing users' ties with everything and dumping them into the same trash heap would result in anything good. Looks like the robots were right about normalfags after all!

>>38098447

This also makes sense, I was here since 2010 but the best time I had on this board often involved 'misogyny' - both real and ironic, and it was great.

I can imagine mods or just anyone coming to associate that with r9k, projecting their fantasies that all r9k posters were losers, and then trying to refer people here, which would explain the sudden influx of pissjug posters back in 2014-15.
>>
is hating underagefags a meme? I think most people started coming here when they were underage, i started at 14 (19 now). just seems a bit hypocritical desu
>>
>>38097927
What >>38098306 >>38098320 this guy said is really accurate. Stuff like spaghetti stories went from being lighthearted and people making fun of themselves to genuinely wallowing in misery.

/r9k/ has always attracted interesting people anyway, since the start, but even after it started going to shit. People post a lot about their personal lives, feelings, a lot they wouldn't post elsewhere. There's been tons of bizarre and hilarious tripfag and other drama in this place, probably more drama and shit than anywhere else on 4chan, which I think most people aren't more than vaguely or superficially aware of or interested in, and don't get involved with. At one point around I think 2013 or so the attention whoring and tripfags were so cancerous a lot of people stopped posting completely.

Nah fuck you.

Sad posters got banned from their home boards because they were ruining them. Then they ruined /r9k/ instead. The blame lies squarely upon them. I can still see their threads burned into the back of my retina's. You're divorcing them from normalfags in your post but sad posters were the original normalfags. Their threads were always about the most trite normalfag problems (doing bad in school, having an argument with a friend, unrequited love etc). There's a reason those types of threads and postings were made bannable on all the other boards and it's because they sucked. When I go to a board I want to read about and discuss the boards topic. A little bit of meta or culture posting is alright but sad posting was something else entirely. The threads would always start off with "I know you guys hate these threads but I really feel like you guys get me, so here's my problem..." fuck that, even they themselves knew they were a detriment to the quality of their board.
>>

I see the Mod Internet Defense Force has arrived. Your problem is that you use IRC or Twitter for conversation, and the boards for Serious Internet Business, and you think that other people should have to do the same shit.

Obviously, "they were ruining the board" is an opinion, and you want to sucker me into either trying to define what is or is not a "normalfag problem" and then whether or not 2007-era posts that no one remembers fit the definition, or trying to LOGICALLY FUKKEN PROVE whether they sucked or not, because you know that these are meaningless blind alleys where no one can prove anything.
For any newfags reading this thread: This is how janfags argue-- they attempt to drag you into opinion-based pissfights where no advancement is possible.

Instead, I'll say this: You got your wish. You segregated all the problem users into /r9k/ and /pol/, which are now the two most relevant boards on the site, and the producers of the content everyone thinks of when they hear "4chan". The other boards are mostly dead or dying, supplanted both in productivity AND quality by sites like (ugh) Twitter and (god help me) Pintrest. As a result of this, your time is mostly spent putting out fires caused by these ungodly Frankenstein agglomerations of users who have no business being near each other, and pleasing the remaining holdouts in the topic boards, who have been led to believe by your past actions that all they need to do to get rid of shit is whine about it. You have successfully killed the goose that laid the golden eggs.

Was it worth it?

Dude I have never used twitter and I have used IRC once or twice although I can't even remember what for. Never been a mod or a janitor and I think hands off moderation is the best approach (some of the funniest and most creative threads could only be allowed to bloom in a low moderation environment). With that said, blogposting should be bannable. The thing about peoples problems is they are always significantly less important and interesting to literally everyone else. An off topic thread about someones girl problems should either go on the board made specifically for that purpose (/adv/) or be deleted by mods.

I dunno what to make of the last paragraph in your post. I don't have anything against current /r9k/ or /pol/.

But yeah you sound like a butthurt blogposter so it seems like if anyone should go off site it should be you.
>>

"Blogposting" is a dumb A-San meme. I'm not hip to the opinions of a man whose home has bucket seats. You're trying to get me to defend the idea that BLOGPOSTING IS INHERENTLY GOOD and I'm not doing that. I'm simply saying that /r9k/'s current state is a direct result of the dumb moderator need to shuffle shit around.
However, I'll also say this. Sure, peoples' problems are more interesting to them. So are their opinions. Are you trying to say we should keep opinions off the boards? What do you have then? Because it sounds like you just want a Booru.

Ronery threads weren't top-of-the-line content. They were fair to middling. Deleting them was a stupid, user-abusing misstep that directly resulted in /r9k/ becoming Depression and Misogyny Central and indirectly resulted in that kind of thing spreading to every other board.

>>38098862

Late 2004 here. I've posted a few times in these threads, so... what else can I say?

I miss the days when moot would randomly add music and a message at top. Seemed like a special day and things were fun :)

I enjoyed the old XBOX IS HUEG days. And heck, even ALL YOUR BASE was still considered to be funny. But it was never really my crowd. Really I think 2007-2009 were the glory days of /b/... coincidentally, when people started talking about "the cancer that is killing /b/". YLYL threads first started appearing, and advice dog split into a ton of different things. I consider the new era as starting with "so i herd u liek mudkips", and there was 4chan's first mainstream exposure on FOX news, calling it the "internet hate machine", and that was really amazing and hilarious. And the Scientology activism made things real. And moot faked there being a meetup in Boston, and a bunch of people showed up and were all meme'd out and having a blast. And everyone online was saying how horrible and embarrassing it was, but I thought it was great. And shortly after, moot met up in NYC, and everyone there had to be sooooooo sophisticated and totally normal... jeez, how boring.

And then for a long time, the standard greeting was "Ron Paul /b/,"

You know, the last time I successfully dodged all of these little rhetorical traps, the guy I was arguing with somehow went through my post history on another board (:itisamystery:) and just started shitposting at me. I'm gonna try for a repeat!

Did I say, anywhere, that I wanted ZERO moderation? No, I didn't. I said that, specifically, THIS moderation decision was stupid. Oh, and while users may in fact be retards-- how the fuck do you rationalize "users are retards" with "this site is great"-- I've seen the chatlog leak. Are weird, Reddity lifer-janitors and aging hipster sellouts, both of whom hate everything about the way the site works and most of the users, better? Should I be pleased with this shit?

Removing ronery threads was fucking stupid. It will always be stupid, and now it's too late to put the toothpaste back in the tube, because if you suddenly allow them again, they'll just fill up with /r9k/ shit. GG fucking EZ.

I used to mope around the ronery threads on 4chan before Valentines day, and on 4chan in general. Essentially, ronery threads was this big circle-jerk of self-pity where we all commiserated about how alone and unhappy we were.

I haven't seen them in years. They never made me feel any better. The only comfort was the fact that I knew that other people felt like I did and that I could somewhat comfort them.

When I left high school, I had never even had a girl look at me romantically. I never fell in love with anyone, I never went to a dance, all I did was gaming, homework, sleep, eat, repeat. I had people tell me that I was mildly attractive, but that only made it worse because I felt like I was wasting something. My parents only made it worse when they were concerned about me. They thought there was something wrong when I ended up never bringing home a gf in my life.

It was Valentine's Day not that long ago and I'm still trying to get into university. Still have no gf, still feel like a loser. But I've dated a couple times. Fucking up a lot and drove off a girl or two because I have no experience with women whatsoever, but I think I can make things work out if I just keep trying. I've learned a lot about life and people. I just hope I don't die a complete loser and fall in love at least once.

That's all I want. I just want to feel in love at this point. I don't care about sex or dating or anything. I've never felt it before, but I hope it's as good as people say it is.

However, Gamergate (not necessary Five Guys), would never have reached critical mass without the legions of other posters disgruntled by the mods' bullshit judgment calls, e.g. /sp/ and so on. It's squarely on them.

People shared more valuable stuff, and put more time into their posts/shops, because it was like an exclusive club. Less people, and threads moved slower. Minor celebrities would show up- I remember Tom Waits, and the guy who drew Garfield cartoons. The glory days from 2007-2009 (yeah I'm that guy) was when people shared infographics full of helpful information. ...Then, once more and more people flooded in, it slowly went downhill. I don't consider /b/ as culturally significant at all anymore- just a place for children, chads, spammers, and such hardcore losers that they don't even want to read or type. Also, /mischief/ is banned now, if I'm interpreting the deleted-OP tea leaves correctly. It's fucking annoying. I still do that "putting effort into your 'shops" thing, but now I have to find a new board to visit, because the shit I come here for is being voted off by a bunch of autistic forum faggots who missed the off-ramp for Small, Well-Managed Subreddits. And you can't even disagree with them or try to defend yourself, because they're better at fucking imageboard politics than you, and they just turn whatever you're trying to protect into a snarl word, and howler monkey speds who've never had an original thought in their fucking lives jump on the bandwagon, and your forum cred status points go to shit, and it's all over. Ive been here for what feels like forever but almost entirely as a lurker. In 10 years I've probably only posted about 100 times or so I'd say. I guess I just can't shake the newfag mentality.

I learned of 4chan through gamefaqs in some ancient time too. I think on a social board. I forgot that site existed, that was such a long time ago.

>I started browsing only in 2013 and the dominant memes were already pepe/wojak.
2013 here, and this is bullshit.
Still called them sadfrog and feelsguy at that time. I remember the whole ree shit taking off in late 2014, early 2015, on this board and then it spread to the bigger ones.
I remember coming on /r9k/ after hearing that it was /b/ 2.0 but with the robot and making a thread, and politely being told not to post here, for my own sake.

I was told to lurk moar way back in 2006, and I still continue to lurk.

this site ruined me, and i'm just a passive member of the board but i'm on it 24/7

though i do shitpost hard when i get sleep deprived

When people stopped lurking moar is when this site stopped being interesting imo.

4chan was completely impenetrable to newfags, but now everything is spoonfed.

>what happened

The lighthearted kids who got to explore the beginnings of the internet grew up to be chronic masturbators and porn addicts.

I came here in 2010. I got a lot of friends since then, all but one of them online friends I met on this site. Given how much 4chan's rules and cultur have changed over the past 5 years, I think it'd be impossible to do that again.
