You have to balance how much you don't want to get mugged with how much you want to get out of your money. You'll be able to live off $1k fairly well anywhere in eastern europe, but the best value for money are the shittiest countries overall, ie Romania, Ukraine, whereas in (relatively) safer and more civilized ones $1k will not get you quite as much, ie Czech Republic
