Because it's escapism at it's finest. Things happen in anime that couldn't be filmed in real life without costing a fortune. It's the only place I have seen huge dragon fights, epic gory deaths, and futuristic settings that are immersive enough to lose myself in completely. The settings and storylines are beyond anything a movie could do. Plus, anime has adult themes and adult humor to make it better than average children's cartoons. I love it.

tl;dr It's fun to lose myself in the fantasy of anime.

I enjoy watching romance anime, because I've never had a successful relationship. I've had girlfriends, but none of them really ever cared about me. So I like fantasizing about meeting the a girl who really loves me in some nonsuperficual and meaningful lasting way.

to bad 90% of anime is moe trash. Don't get me wrong I love me some moe anime here and there but the market is over saturated with it at this point.
