Let's just wear these again.

Ropes and light weight breathable clothing was phased out because of Germanic fashion. When the Germanic tribes migrated in to Rome they naturally brought their pants wearing selves in large numbers, the Romans weren't strangers to pants however, they were usually adopted by the army and military inclined Emperors because it turns out pants are better for cold climates and for long marches through brush. It should also be mentioned that there was a period of global cooling during this period that added to the popularity of pants.

So a combination of military, weather, culture and fashion destroyed the image of robes as manly. Women weren't effected by such changes because they don't tend to join the army or go out when its cold.
