i mean, ideally, they'd like to stamp out thoughtcrime, but the reality is that it's pretty fucking expensive to jail someone, so if someone socially and economically inconsequential has illegal opinions, it's not that big of a deal

Watch the documentary where Snowden talks about government surveillance.
He says most of the terrorists are already on a watchlist, yet they didnt stop those terrorists from bombing the boston marathon.
Of course i dont know jackshit about this topic i just watched that documentary.

Put it this way, when arresting drug dealers they don't actually care about the smalltime kid on the corner, they care about the suppliers, the importers. They dont have time to care about some curious kid accodentally clicking the wrong links, they care about the people running things.

Unless someone makes a complaint/anonymous tip that you're a threat and they start checking your history as evidence, you'll be fine. Consistent surveillance is a worry (moreso for the future) so you are right to be cautious, but don't be paranoid, everyone makes an internet wrong turn at some point.

It's not paranoia if you know it's true.
I've given money to the Identitarian movement, and that's under surveillance by my country's intelligence services.
What is paranoia is my "bunker" machine running Qubes so the government doesn't read all my stuff or see all my online activity.
Also quite possibly the hairs I leave wedged in doors in my house to see if anyone's been sneaking in.
