OP here. Can't be bothered to write anymore but it's really interesting how Bronte pretty much managed to predict /r9k/, the sexual revolution, and the rise of the genetically superior male almost 200 years ago.

I read the book in secondary school, and throughout the book felt sympathy for Edgar Linton. The girls in my class, even the self proclaimed feminists rooted for Heathcliff, just like Isabella, who in the book finds Heathcliffs violent torture of her dog thrilling, women don't care how despicable a man is so long as he's chad.

He's a sympathetic character. He's a poor battered orphan with a tremendous capacity for love. Sure, he definitely subverts a lot of romantic anti-hero expectations by being a genuine prick, but he's not a completely black character.

I do feel sorry for Edgar though.
