Mostly, herd mentality. Japanese anime started to become popular in America the 80s and 90s and really caught on in the 2000s. It's just people following a trend.

But hardly anyone in Japan is an otaku or hikkikomroi or anything like that. Most people are very normie. The only main difference is they work A LOT harder than westerners.

I would go as far as to say they are looked down on MORE in Japan. Anime is loved by a lot of teenage girls in the west these days. Also anime still has some of that fucking disgusting geek chic appeal for idiots.
