That lady was nuts though. She cried like every other day and told us she hated us with a passion and that we ruin her life. We were in 5-7th grade.

Religious education, in the UK at least, is about studying other religions pretty much. It's basically an attempt at 'improving understanding' or something like that.
Then there's Christian schools. They have the same sort of lessons but tend to focus a bit more on Christianity, obviously. I've experienced both secular and religious schools.

I'm in germany, you can choose between evangelic, catholic christianity and philosophy but in all three you learn about philosophy and other religions too
