I had to awkwardly explain in broken spanish that they had either moved or passed away.

This happens frequently. Even in Ivy League schools, foreign students that can analyse Chaucer have issues in simple conversations. They fully understand what you are saying, it just that conversation is not taught in an academic setting.

How can you tell they are understanding you? Ask them to respond in their native language, then the conversation is surprisingly fluid.
