well as a kid and you see some guy not moving for a long period of time it's like nobody's home. And you wonder "where did they go?" Like where is their mind? What's going on in their head? And since ninjas and shit seem to do it a lot why are they doing it? What is it accomplishing?
How could you think it's not cool and mysterious?

>used to think yoga and meditation were gay as fuck
>actually started practicing it
>trained myself to be less anxious and self loathing in a matter of weeks
not that it will necessarily just dissolve mental illness but if you just struggle with general anxiety and depressive moods then it is very helpful
you also get a nice high after certain chakra meditations
dont knock it till you try it man

Yes you've got me I'm a certified Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction instructor and trained through University of Massachusetts Medical School at the Center for Mindfulness. I'm also a psychotherapist with specialties in anxiety, stress, and trauma. I just happen to lurk on /r9k/ a lot to shill my shit on here. It's exactly like that.
Or I just want others to learn mindfulness like I did, and this site is a legit way to learn it, without spending any shekels.

Show me a credible source next time. Meditation has tons of evidence from multiple sources showing it's good for the brain

I just sit still for like 10 minutes.
Longest I went was 40 minutes.
After not moving for a while it feel like my body turned to stone, and actually getting myself to move at all feels like it takes energy. Even moving a finger feels like it takes conscious effort.
>>37776085
How long have you been doing it? What changed for you since you started?
>>37776211
been doing it for 8 years now.
It cured my depression I suffered from.
I became more relaxed and have a more positive attitude towards everything in life. Life still deals me a lot of shit, but I have sort of "meh" about it.
It takes about two months to learn, to show real effects, but after 8 weeks of daily 20-30 minutes mindfulness meditation, there will be changes in your brain, that CT scans can actually measure, and you will notice in your daily life. At least in my experience and in lots of others experiences I have read about too.
You can do a quick google scholar search about *positive effects of mindfulness* to get lots of scientific studies on the subject with evidence too, backing me up there.
I can also recommend books written about it by Jon Kabat Zinn, if you want to learn more about it.

Thanks for your reply. I dont want to read any books so is the website you linked to enough to learn it?
>>37776355
Yes, it's a full 8-weeks online course, and is enough to professionally learn it. There are lots of texts linked to it to read online on there, but those are optional lecture.
>>37776397
Alright. I better be a better person in 8 weeks.
why waste time doing literally nothing when i could actually be doing something?

Why should we encourage people to meditate to alleviate the bad effect of stress, when they should rather change their life to avoid the sources of stress?
If someone is taking poison everyday, taking an antidote daily isn't the best solution.
Also, mindfulness meditation is all the rage today but physical exercises are even better, and I'm surprised to see mindfulness meditation lumped up with Tai Chi. Tai Chi is a physical activity, the guys I know who practice Tai Chi are shredded like sick cunts, of course it will help them.

my therapist recommended the same thing to me, and i have begun reading up on it and practicing mindfulness too
good to see that it actually has some legit benefits and isnt just therapist mumbo jumbo

Maybe it's because life fucking sucks, and shit happens
You can't live your life without ever encountering something that bothers you. That's like a baby crying because it dropped it's bottle. Shit in life is unavoidable.
I might try meditation, but serious question: why do people always sit in that weird cross-legged position when they meditate? It seems unnecessary and looks really silly.
>>37776838
It is. Sit or lie however you want. You can use music too. Even techno metal worked for me in some cases.
>>37776838
It's just a comfy way to sit, and then it became tradition. Sot it's just a doubly good way to do it. Some people are too fat or inflexible to sit normal so they have to alter the position they use.
