You aren't getting paid back. Lending money to friends and family is a huge mistake because of the mutual trust they think they don't have to repay the loan, because you're friends/family you won't do anything bad to them. In the first place you should never lend out money without getting in writing an agreement to repay the loan. Without an agreement in writing you have no case in court if you sue them. Demanding friends and family sign a contract to accept a loan from you is crass though, it's pretty much an asshole thing to do and shows you don't trust them. That's why you don't loan money to friends and family.

>>37729792
True. I would feel like an ass getting mom (or anyone else I'm close to) to sign a contract for repayment... On the same token, mom has helped me a lot, and she's poor as fuck, so I'd feel like an ass for saying no if I can help.

Still, asking for a fairly large sum of money for bills, then spending over 1/10ths of it on booze makes me wonder.
>>
>>37729792
I think it depends on the person, really. My family lends me money all the time and I pay back at least 150% of what was borrowed, usually 200%. I pay them back as soon as I get paid. ASAP. It's the first thing I do so I don't have to think about it again. They usually lend me around $20-200. Yeah, it sucks to be asking for money but at least they're making profit by lending me money instead of me paying some bank interest and shit.

A parent has to care for their children because we're not reptiles. A child can't care for itself and you chose to make it so you have an obligation to care for it. No child decided to create their parents as a retirement plan.

>>37730751
Raising a kid is part of having it. If you don't want to raise it, then give it to an orphanage. Don't demand all of their money and sabotage their life just because you're lazy.
>>
>>37730806
Raising a kid =/= giving it money because it didn't ask to be born.

Kids helping their parents =/= a retirement plan.

I mean, I agree with your points, but they are unrelated to your posts about kids being owed money because they weren't asked to be born.

>let parents borrow $3000 to help repair water damage in January

It's like they don't want me to move out at this point, every time I save up over about $5000 they ask to borrow some and then continually put off paying it back. I have a hard time refusing to let them borrow though because it's still cheaper than living elsewhere. I just don't get why anyone would live so close to bankruptcy constantly, my parents literally live paycheck to paycheck. My dad makes over $100k/year, there's no reason to live like that except that they constantly buy shit they don't need and go on vacations.

>>37729792
You're right, but it's difficult to refuse a family member when you're living in their house for free and over the age of 18.
>>
What's the big deal if she paid the bills. You agreed to 500. She might of came up with another way to get some of the cash together you lent it, did you give her a time frame for paying it back? If you give someone money it's theirs to do what they want with it.
>>

>>37731056
>I have a hard time refusing to let them borrow though because it's still cheaper than living elsewhere.
nigga, if you're able to save $5k you're able to move out. do you even pay rent? if not, then that money you let them "borrow" is basically rent. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't pay you back because they rationalize it by letting you live rent free.
>>
>>37731219
They're sabotaging his life.
Because of them trapping him he can never get into a serious relationship, be taken seriously in his career and can't ever have a sense of agency.
A loving parent wouldnt do that to their child. They're obviously not having financial troubles, they're just exploiting him.

>What's the big deal if she paid the bills

Because, before I gave her the money, I asked what she was using it for. She said that she had bills to pay. I gave her the money, then she immediately left the car and went to the liquor store. I'd be less pissed if she were 100% honest.

She was hoping for a couple other checks to come through before asking me, and she has no other way of getting money, so I'm guessing I'm the last resort.

When asked when she would repay me, she said "when she was able :^)". I'd ask her about it every once and a while. Not every day, but often enough to make sure she doesn't forget.

>>37730956
As per an above paragraph, I gave her the money under the presumption that it would be for paying bills.

>>37731056

You didn't do anything wrong.
Your mother is a piece of shit and so are the people taking her side.

You should get a roommate. Your life will be so much better.
>>
>>37731527
He should pay for her. If he's living in her house and earning a wage how do you figure that she's not owed anything?
Isn't that the slavery thing you keep pitching about? It's in the very least theft.

How long does a child deserve infinite support by virtue of being dragged into the world? until the parent dies? I get that you feel wronged by someone, but OP is not you. A lot of the leeches that live off of their parents resources would probably be better served by giving back to the household without the pretense that they'll see the money again.
>>
>>37731665
His mother obviously didn't need the money if she's just using it to get drunk.
If she needs money she can just be upfront and say he owes her a certain amount every month. She can charge rent or fuck off instead of just taking it on a whim.
>>
>>37731484
>Because, before I gave her the money, I asked what she was using it for. She said that she had bills to pay. I gave her the money, then she immediately left the car and went to the liquor store. I'd be less pissed if she were 100% honest.

Dude I know exactly where you're coming from. I'd give my mom money for bills, I'd fund her to be able to go to work, after helping her with all that and the bills, and doing all sorts of work around her house, she'd still ask to borrow money. If you give someone money it doesn't matter what they claim it's for you gave it to them to do what they're going to do. I honestly learned never expect money back loaning money to my mom because she couldn't budget. Honestly try to hide as fucking much money as possible and get out is the only advice I can give you aside from, if you give money, you gave it. Theirs now. Don't ever expect it back. You wouldn't believe the shit I had to go through for my mom to stop financially sabotaging me, save money, hide it, tell her you spent it, and get out of there before you have to go through some serious shit to get out.
>>
>>37731716
yeah fair enough, better communication would probably help things out but in America she probably did not anticipate cohabitation with her adult child indefinitely
>>
>>37731739
Don't get me wrong, I wanted to help my mom out. Except she just made it unmanageable for me to keep doing it, or even help myself, I assume it was so she thought I'd get stuck and she'd be able to keep milking money out of me. Then kept trying to make my life miserable as possible when she couldn't keep milking it for everything should could. Your situation might be different, but since you're posting here I'm assuming you live with her. Get out, help yourself, when you can pay your own bills you can let her live with you. If it's the other way around you're in for a world of shit.

Depends on what type of person your mom is. Some people will try to wring everything they can out of you. Your mom ever gaslight ? My mom seemed okay until I lost my girlfriend when I was a teenager, then she really changed in personality. I went off on her in an argument and she changed slowly but started getting more and more abusive after that. I was too dumb thinking of the past, and not the future because the present was constantly getting worse and I didn't think there was much I could do about it until I got a lucky break, when I did she completely sabotaged it, then cranked up the abuse since her plan worked the first time and she was mad over the old stuff while getting even more mad that she killed the goose that lays the golden eggs.

Might be your mom and all but don't assume she has your best interest in mind if she did once in the past.

One of the roommates is the landlord. Just an irresponsible one. They got me out of a bad situation and while I'm thankful I feel either unwanted to or taken advantage of. One is my best friend of 10 years, his mom, stepdad and a guy she also calls her son (some dude she met at a grocery store).
