it frustrates me so much when people say "just get a hobby".

Interest in what you pursue should be genuine. It's supposed to hook you in enough to keep going. I've never felt good faking enthusiasm for anything, and I've tried it with lots of things which others take to naturally - it all peters out in the end, except for those things which started with genuine interest. Can genuine interest be forced into existence?

No, I don't. It's not any more of a waste than anything else. The vast majority of people don't make any meaningful contribution to society in their life. Might as well do what you enjoy
