People in the Western world have comfortable lives.

With our physical needs almost fully attended to, we're better able to focus on where we might be psychologically fulfilled. That leads to a lot of intense introspection as well as an emphasis on an excess acquisition of material goods and luxury items.

Most modern men and women don't ever have to really struggle for much of anything. While they might occasionally have trouble paying the bills or dealing with an unpleasant boss, they're assured of good health, a full stomach, and utilities to keep them warm in the winter and cool in summer.

Physical labor isn't a daily part of everyday life - at least not for many - so the focal point of our concerns and complaints becomes our mental woes and personal insecurities.
