I'm a guy, I have some guy friends who share my more obscure interests.
Every time we get the chance, we end up competing to see who is the biggest autist about whatever our shared interest is.
I've gone and learned about things I don't have any interest in whatsoever just so I can insert myself into my friend's conversations and make sure they know I know more than them.

Only video games I'm into are wargame simulations that are pure autismo. As for other hobbies tabletop, documentaries, major history buff, painting models, cinephile/movie mistake spotter. I read tons of factual stuff just to have the information and I find that extremely fun in its own way. I met up with a guy and we spoke about aliens lore for an entire hour over coffee. When finding a mate, females are the selectors. In order to attract a female, the male must prove his worth. This means having skills and being competitive. Modern society allows this to manifest itself in many ways. This means putting the time in to develop the skills to earn money, intelligence, strength, etc. As a side-effect, men also put their efforts into secondary hobbies. These might not necessarily be to attract women, but they are a symptom of the similar pursuit of developing skills to prove you can provide for a female.

And what do women need, as the selectors, to earn a mate?

Nothing.

They don't need skills or interesting hobbies. All they need is moderate looks and the ability to gain as much male attention as possible. In order to do so, AT MOST, females will pretend to enjoy a certain hobby in order to open themselves up to an untapped source of male attention. This is why, once average/attractive males began playing video games and it stopped being something only the lowest of low of men enjoyed, the industry was saturated with "grrrl gamers" soon after.
