Not that I hope for anything bad to happen to anyone, but I was down south with Red Cross twice last year and I'd sure love to go back with a free flight and a ration card. I'm going to bring an empty suitcase just for food and thrift shop clothes (weird how many options there are in large compared to here, I wonder why). I had some fried peanuts in South Carolina, grits in Louisiana. Hung out with the Louisiana National Guard down there too, what a bunch of cool and real kids with absolutely no fear whatsoever.

I have many roles, fellow retiredbro. The most fun I had was in New Orleans doing damage report hot shots with these three black guys from Mobile. They were constantly fucking with each other. They're always looking for husband and wife teams to drive the ERV if you're interested, run down to your chapter and have a look. You show up to the kitchen at about 6am and get supplied, then you drive around handing out meals. Basically you are completely on your own from the minute you leave the kitchen. One ERV team somewhere down there actually got stopped by the actual sheriff of this little town who led them down these twisted, washed out roads to a neighborhood where everything was totally fucked. It was the first proper meal they'd had in days, they fed the workers too.

I like working in shelters but they days can get pretty long. One of the best things about damage assessments is you can't do them at night so you get back to your bunk in plenty of time to drink / hang out / shoot the shit, or go out and see the city. There's always someone with a rental car going out. Staff sheltering is like summer camp for adults. And there are people who get deployed who are barely ambulatory, so if you're even halfway physically fit they will give you whatever you want.

I sort of feel the same way. Working in a shelter is more like a job, but the real cowboy shit is fun as hell. There's a guy I know south of here, his Red Cross chapter is the secondary emergency command center for his region, so there's tons of ham radio shit I'd like to eventually get into. It's a good community. Lots of cowboys.

It's good enough to talk to repeaters, which is where most people hang out anyway. In bigger cities or on bigger repeater networks it can get pretty weird. I'd love to take it to Chicago and go up on a high floor and see what those guys are getting up to on the government airwaves. I can hit the repeater about 4 miles away from my house loud and clear.
