Put half of it in bank, use a good chunk of it to purchase a reasonably sized home for myself in an okay neighborhood and on home security. Invest the rest. take maybe 5-10% as an entertainment budget that will have me set for the next few years at least since I'm pretty frugal.

If we're talking a huge lottery win I'd buy a small mountain retreat and turn the whole house into one big comfy neetcave.

Immediately hire a quality lawyer, accountant, and maybe a fee-based fiduciary. I'll follow the lawyer's advice to protect myself which may involve setting up trusts, purchasing insurance policies or the like. Make sure my taxes are in order. I'll probably invest most of it into a conservative allocation of bonds and stocks via low cost index funds. Obviously I won't tell anybody. I'll probably keep working at my job because it is actually somewhat enjoyable. This will serve as a good cushion in case things go wrong.
