Why? Large bodies of water are a disturbing, harsh thing. Drowning is a horrible feeling of helplessness as the water penetrates your every orifice against your will, you can't even call out for help while you lose the ability to breathe and your entire world becomes something cold, harsh, blue and salty.

Personally, I just do laps. It's great exercise and it's pretty fun seeing how fast you can get to one end of the pool and back.

Never took swimming lessons either. I just learned to swim on my own. Legit had a lifeguard ask me if I swim competitively because I had "fantastic form". Don't know if she was trying to insult me, but from what I could read on her face she seemed genuine.
