>whenever I'm around extended family I'm pretty much on autopilot
>have scripted emotions and subjects to talk about, i.e. How's school going, how's the apartment holding up, etc.
>have a baby cousin, really shy and hasn't started speaking yet despite her age (3)
>always make sure to ask my uncle if she's speaking yet
>tfw social autopilot makes me ask that every year I see my uncle
>tfw my cousin is now in middle school on the honor roll
>tfw I literally talked to her every year at Christmas for the past 8 years
Seriously how fucking retarded does this make me? Even people with autism aren't this retarded
The family unit is so loose in America now it seems like no one outside of your immediate family is anything more than a glorified acquaintance, at least if they're not geographically close.
I think most peoples' relationships with their extended family aren't much more than those canned responses and inane small talk.
"Look how tall you are now/How big you've gotten" etc
