It's a dichotomy. You grow up nice because you want validation that isn't easily gotten such as it is if you are good looking. There's no such thing as altruism, I'm not nice, I'm just kind to people. If you can tap the unseen world, the spirituality of relationships, you can enjoy yourself with someone who is not 'nice'. This is all based on the concept that you value a material world, your self-proclaimed desire for "good looking" guys.
