I did know that my teacher is from hokkaido which is what originally got me interested, she always says its somewhere where people from around here the countryside in texas would enjoy but that doesn't change the fact that if I just want snow and comfy scenery there's other places

I'm learning jap, I'm barely through most of hiragana, but at least I'm starting to read some smaller words, like arigato and shit. It's definitely GONNA be a year till I can read full EASY sentences without difficulty.

You can definitely read basic sentences before a year if you practice somewhat consistently. The kanji is where most people trip up, but that mostly comes down to rote memorization. Hiragana/Katakana can be learned at the same time tbqh. Just get some flashcards. Or use an app like memrise although I feel that artificially slows you down.
