I've thought about this, and I believe you are not bound to the thoughts stemming from the self (as opposed to the ego).
Your reflexions and analysis that come after these original thoughts were streamed from the self to the ego are the fruits of the ego, not the self. They can be an equal source of knowledge.

OCD much?

I've either found enlightenment or I've had a stroke but for the most part I think about almost nothing any more, and when I do I often have to force myself to think about it.
This isn't to say I'm never thinking about anything, sometimes I have random thought streams but they're a little nonsensical and only for my amusement.

I guess you've gotta let your head do its thing and if you don't like the direction it's taking ride it out, it'll pass and it's not something you can escape from forever.
