I can make a basic song out of all of them because I know scales and for the inexperienced, it sounds great. i spent 6 years playing the violin and am unbelievably bad at it.

i went to a private school that offered free before-school lessons and my parents were like "that's a steal!" so they signed me up.

eventually the instructors had to tell me to quit taking lessons so they could include more of the younger students, but it was plainly obvious they wanted me out because i was garbage at playing (which was undeniably true)

i took guitar lessons when i was like 14 and sucked at it, so i quit.

at some point i remember my mom signed me up for piano lessons, but i think i went to like 2 of those.

i then proceeded to go to college with actual conservatory musicians, where they all pretty much agreed that if you haven't learned an instrument before you begin puberty, you probably won't ever be very good at it.

they only tell people this because it includes them and they want to feel like they're a part of something exclusive. In truth it's all just down to number of hours and efficiency of practice. Piano is not chess or language, your brain's malleability in young age is not going to help you that much. It's the same reason they say that absolute pitch is something you're born with and can't be learned, even though that's also not true (a skill that only 1 in 10,000 people possess and somehow half of your conservatory has it? Yeah that's a tough one. I derived very little pleasure from playing piano until my mid teens when I'd already been playing for about 5-6 years. I think that things get a lot better when you reach an intermediate level of proficiency. Like, instead of playing some silly sonatina by some random composer, I could hack my way through some nice pieces like a Joplin Rag or a Chopin Nocturne

And like I said before, there are plenty of easy pieces to be enjoyed (off the top of my head Handel's minuet in g minor. Grieg's Arietta, Beethoven bagatelles/Sonatas 19&20, certain Chopin preludes) but my teacher didn't seem to want to give those pieces to me. And I didn't have the motivation to seek them out lol

Anyways I forget my point but there's no need to be a virtuoso to enjoy playing music. But if you feel like you don't want to learn an instrument don't feel like I'm trying to pressure you either

i prefer to make instruments and give them to some-one who can already play it, it's a lot harder to get to a level of instrument playing where you sound decent than it is to get to a level of instrument making where they sound decent.

I got an acoustic guitar last year, at 21. I'm pretty mediocre at it but good enough to play some stuff I like (Simon and Garfunkel, vashti bunyan, the Smiths) and make it sound decent.

Don't listen to people who say you can't learn anything past puberty. Chances are you don't want to be a concert player anyways. As long as you have fun it's fine.
